Today in MBB - lots of upsets and tight games

Submitted by mi93 on

Duke lost to a 10-13 St. John's team that had lost 11 straight.

Kansas lost at home to unranked Ok St.

Rutgers, that's right, Rutgers, loses to Purdue by 2.

Texas gives us a resume boost with a win over Oklahoma.

Missouri upsets Kentucky.

Georgetown is giving Xavier all they can handle right now.

Sparty still to play in Assembly Hall (the Indiana version) and Pitt is hanging with UNC early.

Every team in America that's close to the bubble is kicking in to desperation mode and no game is a given.  Today's survival feels better with all the upset mojo flying around this weekend.

but I'm concerned about this pattern of playing tight against weaker opponents. If they can go toe to toe with MSU and Purdue, they should blow the doors off the likes of Minnesota and Northwestern at home. Maybe it's just a maturing process and they will figure it out soon.

But at 11 on BTN they will air the The Journey and it will have the story they did on X. I would have started a thread for this, but apparently saying O'Korn sucks gets you banned.  So much for freedom of speech.

The little of things gets this board up at arms.. I was so close to misspelling a couple words to get the rest of them going. I am just frustrated at saying an opinion that I had/have... and get banned for it.

I have seen way worse than what I said and they are still here.

The reason why I am bitter is because my join date for mgoblog actually had some personal meaning.. it would have been nice to be able to keep that.

*and just a quick side note... there may have been some bourbon involved in the midst of typing that.

You didn't get banned for sharing an opinion. Edit:I don't know who you are. If its a collective apology from the board you seek, you wont find it here. What I do have, is a very particularly fine tuned asshole radar. It allows me to know when not to pay attention to people like you, because you will inevitably say some stupid shit again. Just know this: the mods will once again find you. And they will once again ban you.

all i said was O'korn you suck, You can search it out if you want. the account that was banned is goblueinohio.  I am not looking for anything from the board.. I have been coming here less and less as the site has gotten really bad over petty things. Almost a good ole boys club... Which is why I stay away from it. I don't like clicky groups and this is one of them.

I don't disagree with your overall point.  Upsets in college basketball happen.  Crazy days like today where many highly ranked teams go down happen.

Unfortunately, today's game wasn't an isolated incident for us.  Shitty teams keep coming in to Crisler and play amazingly (and annoyingly) well.  Every game is so damn stressful.  It takes us forever to get any kind of rhythm going and in the meantime, opponents are making crazy shots that you don't see them make against other teams in the Big Ten.  For GOD's sake, if you're going to put in an amazing effort, do it against OSU and MSU.  Stop doing it against Michigan.

I'll still tune it and root for our guys.  That goes without saying.  I just wish we could play a game where it doesn't feel like I've aged ten years.

Someone tell me a team in college basketball that “blow the doors off” every lesser team they play.
Not sure why we expect our team to do it when no one else can. Enjoy the program...

So great teams do usually blow out average to week teams. For example, Purdue may have struggled tonight, but they are outscoring B1G opponents by 20 pts per 100 possessions. We're merely a good team so we tend to struggle more. Still I love the fight this team shows and will enjoy the rest of the season.

Poor free throw shooting will be our downfall. Beilien should have Matthews and X shoot 10000 free throws a day until their percentage comes up.

UM is 19-6 (with six regular season games remaining), and even in a soft B1G conf, that's still a significant accomplishment.  UM is a lock for the NCAA tourney, and maybe even a #4-6 seed.

That's the clinical definition of a "glass half full" mood.  If you are expecting more, you seriously need to re-assess your ability to judge how the world really works.

On the one hand, nobody keeps playing great basketball all the time. The season is a drag. Everybody had close shaves and bad losses and weird games where things go wrong. And everybody has bad stretches--remember, that great team that almost won the national title finished the season in a slump that cost it the B1G title and crashed out of the B1G tournament early. If Trey Burke's 45-ish-foot 3 is a brick instead of the greatest swish ever, the season is a disappointment and John Beilein might not even be our coach right now.

On the other hand, Michigan has played pretty badly since beating MSU, except for the game against Purdue. One wonders if there is something in the way Michigan is "contesting" these freakish contested shots that actually makes them less difficult to make. More notably, the weakness in the games of a lot of the players keeps getting exposed. And, of course, the FT shooting is a season-long problem that has almost cost us a couple of games already. It's something to be concerned about.

But at least we're winning these tight games and we have a signature win and UCLA and Texas aren't embarrassing themselves. It's not nothing. At this time last year people wanted Beilein fired.

As for the stuff happening elsewhere in college basketball, well, this tweet is the gift that keeps on giving:
