The tragedy at the time was that the MLB itself did not publish its own record book, so it wasn't until they did in fact get control of that some time after 1961 that the distinction was erased and Maris was listed as the recordholder. I believe there's a story out there that Frick was a personal friend of Ruth and invented the distinction (which was unofficial) on behalf of his late friend.

1) Ford Frick was indeed a friend of Ruth. He even did some ghostwriting for Ruth when Ruth "wrote" some newspaper columns about baseball. Frick was a former reporter himself.

2) Frick advocated not for an asterisk, but for two seperate records instead. One for a 154 game season (which was up until 1960), and one for a 162-game season.

Here's one that doesn't need a correction or asterisk.  Joey Chestnut set the new hot dog eating record - 70 dogs in 10 minutes.  Good God!
