Qb idea

Why not?

bad idea
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:53 PM ^
First of all he hasn’t been practicing with our offense. He’s been scout team QB, second of all that’s not how redshirts work, it’s the first quarter of the season you can play. Third of all he’s not an option, Thayer not burning his redshirt. That would be a terrible idea
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:55 PM ^
Pretty sure that's not how it works. At a certain point in the season, if you play, you are ineligible for the medical redshirt. It isn't based on amount of time on the field, it is when during the season you play. If DCaff plays, he is a sophmore next season. No Ifs, ands, or buts about it.
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:50 PM ^
and your redshirt comes off, with no chance for a medical RS. They are looking at a rule change to make an exception for bowl games. That's a reaction to players looking ahead to the NFL draft and sitting out bowl games.
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:44 PM ^
kill it against OSU, I think he be in (and would have been in a long time ago). Everyone else already hit it that a true frosh playing with the scout team all year isn't a good enough bet to do well. Ain't happening.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:51 PM ^
This.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:37 PM ^
...and be very effective as long as we add a play where 10 Michigan offensive players quickly form a tight circle with arms interlocked and put the ball carrier in the middle so the defense can't get to him. Then we march the QB down the field and across the goal line.
It could work!

Thought you could only play in games in the front end of the schedule and not burn a RS.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:52 PM ^
Just post this as a comment in the thread that made you reach this Eureka! moment.
I’m sure you’re a great guy and you have great ideas like this all the time.
I’m just not sure you have to create a thread about them.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:57 PM ^
If it was bad to create a thread on this I'm cool with whoever can deleting it. I thought it would be an interesting discussion. Sorry If i offended you homie.

Haha am I that annoying? Sorry if I am bruh. Didn't know about this website until two Saturday's ago.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:13 PM ^
My first thought when a new user posts as much as you do is usually "how long can they hold it together before they cross the line again?"
However, the redshirt rules are pretty well known around here, so the fact you didn't know that playing McCaffrey would absolutely burn his redshirt is actually a point in your favor here.
Welcome to the MGoBoard.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:18 PM ^
Just excited man. This site is fun as hell and fairly easy to use once you get use to it. Thanks for the welcome. Is a thread like this generally over the line?
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:25 PM ^
Was for me the biggest problem. Next time I’d at least recommend asking about the redshirt rule in one of the many other threads about our quarterback woes before posting something based on a factually inaccurate premise.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:28 PM ^
Fair point. Can't believe I was wrong on that. Was especially thinking since O'Maury got a few runs late in the year that the coaches were gonna just say he had an injury and get him a redshirt.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:40 PM ^
Usually starting threads is for breaking news or relevant fluff pieces.
If you want to start a board topic based on a thought like this one, try to provide a little analysis or detailed discussion points. There will always be someone who doesn't think sometging is thread-worthy, but the voting is a pretty good indicator of whether or not a thread is a good idea.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:14 PM ^
You didn’t offend me, and this is probably the first time ever ever talked about the worthiness of a thread. I must have been triggered by other snowflake threads recently.
But it’s getting insane around here. Everyone seems to want to start a thread for every idea they want to talk about. But threads get hundreds of comments. If someone thinks it’s interesting, they’ll respend to you in another thread.

Cool. Just thought with qb being a concern prolly runnin through all our minds that this would be interesting. Take care brotha.

An impressive point total for two weeks.

I'm thinking about creating a "Eureka! moment" appreciation thread. Thoughts?
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:11 PM ^
Only for the first part of the season - otherwise you have to redshirt that idea.

I did for a few years, but then I started posting snide bullshit snark in response to bad comments.

+1 on mobile for you kind sir!
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:52 PM ^
Doesn't it have to be a "certifiable" injury, though? I'm sure the NCAA has already made arrangements to prevent athetlic fraud from happening.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:53 PM ^
He is 6’4, 170 pounds soaking wet. You want to thrust him into The Game with their defensive line? We are better off doing what Kentucky did to Tennessee a few years ago — put a skilled position player that was a QB in high school back there and run wildcat the entire game. Surely Gentry, McDoom and Evans / Higdon can handle that.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:16 PM ^
in a comment yesterday. Maybe the OP should edit the post and change it to Genrty (and delect the red shirt part).
November 22nd, 2017 at 5:41 PM ^
Didn't Baylor also do something similar in one of their bowl games a few years back? I believe they were down to 0 QBs and ran wildcat sets most of the time and had something like 600 yards on the ground.
November 22nd, 2017 at 9:14 PM ^
Also Baylor is one of the basement teams this year.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:53 PM ^
defenses in the nation is nuts. Remember there was a reason for the Peters insertion at a specific date. Throwing Dylan-and i realize he's probably ahead of most his age- is still ludicruous. We'll take John and do the best we can and not worry about having this young man suffer a serious injury before he's able to adapt against lesser, much lesser athletes.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:53 PM ^
Run FB dives all game.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:54 PM ^
From my understanding, a player who plays in the second half of the season cannot receive a medical redshirt.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:11 PM ^
Correct.
November 22nd, 2017 at 1:57 PM ^
You'd be throwing McCaffery into a no-win scenario. You honestly don't think that OSU would stack the box with 9 guys and bring the house on every other play?
If we had a wooly mammoth, Bama-esque OL that could protect him and great running backs to take the pressure off of him, you could probably talk me into it. But you'd have a true freshman QB starting behind the worst OL in the country when it comes to pass pro. Going up against arguably the best and deepest DL in college football. What the hell do you think is going to happen? There's no way he walks out of that game with his head still attached to his body.
We don't need to send him out to slaughter. Also, if we lose to them 49-3 and burn his redshirt in the process, would you still think that's okay? Because that outcome with McCaffery at the helm is far more likely than him springing an upset.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:01 PM ^
I would not think that's ok, but I don't think Coach would play him (and I wouldn't want him to) if he thought that result was possible.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:01 PM ^
RS would still be burned.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:01 PM ^
I totally agree that Harbaugh would play the QB which, in his estimation, gives us the best chance to win. To that point, I think that might also be the reason you really haven't heard much about McCaffery to date, and that isn't to say anything about his ability overall, just to where he probably is on the depth chart and in the system. I wouldn't roll him out save in some bizarre emergency scenario where he was the only person who could stand whose position on the roster read "QB", and really, why would you want THIS game to be his first, of all games? The move makes zero sense even as a thought experiment.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:05 PM ^
No I would not want it to be his first game unless coach thought it was best. I see what your saying, but I just feel like I could see Coach doing this if he thought it was best regardless of redshirt.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:26 PM ^
If he was ready, and better than the 3 guys in front of him on the depth chart, I think Harbaugh would play him, redshirt be damned.
I mean, if he's really that good he's not staying for 5 years anyway.
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:03 PM ^
no freaking way
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:14 PM ^
So you think maybe?
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:04 PM ^
If the game is close in the 2nd half and O'Korn gets hurt, I'm with you in that I'd play him, but only if the decision has been made for Speight to be extended the offer to come back. If UM goes into next season with Speight and Peters, there's a good to great chance McCaffrey can redshirt next season as the 3rd string QB, right?
November 22nd, 2017 at 2:06 PM ^
Interesting thought.
