Possible Grad Transfer Driskel EDIT
Florida QB Jeff Driskel has been granted a release to transfer. He has graduated this year so can play right away. He was a five star recruit who played a lot but never panned out, and was replaced half way through this season. Not exactly Hogan but maybe worth a shot. Possible that Durkin has some inside knowledge about his potential (even though he is a defensive coach).
EDIT: He came in today and did not look good. Threw a pick in the second half that led to a TD.

Driskel's HS tape is maybe the most impressive I've ever seen. He's been bad at Florida, but he's got talent like crazy if somebody can figure out what to do with it.

If I were a QB, I would want to play for David Cutcliffe, too.

Magnus, Im well aware of Shane Morris' stats. I still think with quality QB coaching, (read: Harbaugh), he might be just fine. What say you?

So say we all

I agree, although my hopes have obviously dimmed. I always had doubts about Morris, but I somewhat assumed that he would be good with some college coaching. Unfortunately, he looks bewildered out there. He has the physical tools - decent speed, a rocket arm, etc. - but his decision making has been terrible. It's not even his accuracy that seems like the biggest issue. If Harbaugh can build a running game, run some play action off of it, and simplify Morris's reads, I think he can be good. But at this point, it doesn't seem like Morris is going to be a guy who can drop back and pick apart a defense. Those hopes have gone out the window for me.

I hate saying this, but ever since his bout with mono, Shane Morris has looked like a guy who is "almost there" but never quite makes it all the way back. He didn't look good at all in the Under Armour game. To me, his thought processes seem slow.
The upside: he has had three OC's in three years counting HS, so he might not be nearly as bad as he has looked. I would blame 2013 on inexperience and 2014 on the Hoke/Nuss Clusterfuck Offense.
Everybody is starting out fresh in the spring. I have a feeling we'll know about Morris soon enough. I still think that Harbaugh will turn at least two of the players he has now into serviceable QB's.

I was never impressed with Morris' tape coming out and thought the 5 star rating was premature. I'm not familiar with Michigan HS football, but I believe he was only playing at a mid-level school?
Seemed like a kid who matured early, looked like a 5-star SOPH and kept the hype train going. Every high school has the guy who is a stud as a freshman and by senior year, the rest of the boys have caught up.

I would really like Hogan instead, best case he makes the QB competition more intense, and the best guy emerges.

He will be lucky to start at an average MAC/CUSA school

Braxton Miller, Kevin Hogan, Everett Golson, Jeff Driskel could all be on the move and Cody Kessler was on this list until he got crazy hot midway through the season and became the most underrated QB in the country.

How is golson gonna be a grad transfer? Did he graduate from ND? I thought he had only been there 3 years and was kicked out most of last year...
January 3rd, 2015 at 3:24 PM ^
It has nothing to do with your playing eligibility, it's your academic eligibility.
January 3rd, 2015 at 4:58 PM ^
Either way, he says he's going to graduate in May.

How is a transfer a waste of a scholarship? In fact with it being so late in the game for recruiting getting a grad transfer who is a scenior wold allow that scholarship to be open again in a year.
January 3rd, 2015 at 1:10 PM ^
A senior is only talking a potential scholarship from a walkon if he comes.

Waivers are only needed if the player had previously transferred. I don't see how that would matter anyhow.
January 3rd, 2015 at 1:25 PM ^
This is exactly right. It will have no impact on recruiting at all. Harbaugh won't save a spot for Hogan in case he might come, but it's almost certain that between signing day and summer, one scholarship will open up. And he'll be off the books by the next recruiting cycle.
Hell, if Hogan isn't coming, why not take Driskel? Worst case scenario he sits on our bench for a year. He might come in and do well in a different system, or he might just be our clear #2 option if our starter gets hurt.
Is it possible Driskel is better than all of our QBs? Certainly. Is it likely he's better than all of them except Shane? Certainly. Bringing in a kid for one year to be a solid back up isn't a bad idea.

It wasn't too long ago when Chad Lindsay's graduation frm Alabama and Doug Nussmeier's hiring at Michigan made it seem like Lindsay would become Michigan's starting center in 2014. . . . And then Lindsay went elsewhere.
Chad Lindsay suffered a career-ending injury in September after transferring to Ohio State. Considering where Ohio State will be playing on January 12, had he been healthy all season, he might have had the distinction of playing in the college football championship game for two different teams-- Alabama in 2012 and 2013 and Ohio State in 2015. (I believe that Cam Newton was suspended from the Florida team before it won the 2008 college football championship game, so I don't know whether he'd count ashaving had that distincton. Have there been any others who've had that distincton?)

Kirk's got information that the rest of us don't. He knows for a fact we won't take a transfer.

Don't let the chip give you any crap.
However, your post, based on my opinion, did not make sense. As pointed out. With the short recruiting window and the fact a grad transfer only takes one year, it is a no brainer if they are any good.
January 3rd, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
I think they would if they thought they had a decent option.

Is he Devin Gardner's twin? Looks like he was relatively serviceable in 2012-2013, but majorly regressed in 2014.
January 3rd, 2015 at 1:08 PM ^
The nice thing about grad transfers is you only give the scholarship for one year. it's very likely we'll have scholarships to burn this year, unless the HARBAUGH recruiting magic is really magical, so there could be no reason not to. If he shows up, is given some simpler reads, and ends up looking good, that could be useful. Miller and Golston seem unlikely as rivals.
January 3rd, 2015 at 1:29 PM ^
Just looking at history across the country it would seem that there is a decent chance of a scholarship opening up between signing day and fall camp due to some sort of off-field attrition.
January 3rd, 2015 at 1:08 PM ^
I'd rather one of the current Michigan QB's step up and be the man next season. I hate the idea of one and done grad transfers.
