Pep Hamilton -- New Title? New Responsibilities

Submitted by ChalmersE on

Per Maize n Brew, he's now "Assistant Head Coach/Passing Game Cooridnator/Quaterbacks and Wide Receivers Coach".  That's how he's listed in the Atheletic Department Directory.

Rather than have Hamilton coach both. If they want to call him an assistant WR coach or whatever, I don't care, I want someone whose focus is directly on the one position coach.

Michigan still has an opening, not sure who they will hire. I think Warriner would be a great OL coach. I think Bush would be a great safety coach. But it's not obvious that is the plan right now (though if I had to predict, I think Warriner is Michigan's OL coach in 2019 for one reason or another).

Sorry to ask these things. Someone with clarity please chime in... 1. How can Enos sign a 4 yr contract then leave for Alabama? Is there that breach of contract? 2. Dont the coaches have in their contract that prohibits them from coaching at their rival later on? Eg how can Wariness coach at Mich. I thought this was similar to transfer rules where they can block a player going to a rival.

1. Assistant coach contracts often have a buyout clause. That would be the de facto penalty for a breach of contract. I've never heard of that clause applying in the case of a promotion. You can't hire good assistants if you bar them from moving up.

2. Not for a coach you fired or pushed out or whose contract expired.. You realize Warriner is coming from Minnesota? Head coaches have been known to have a clause that let them leave for a specific school without penalty, but I've never heard of turning that around.

maybe that was an oversight last season. It's pretty clear that Pep was the WR and QB coach and those were the only position groups without a listed coach. For some reason they listed Brian Smith as a defensive backs coach and Zordich as a secondary coach. That's either weird or sloppy.

The question is why the change now? Did they just decide to redo the list or has Harbaugh decided that Enos' replacement is going to take a different group? Maybe this means Warriner is joining Drevno and splitting the OL again.

I am not one of the Pep haters. I reserve judgement until after this coming season. I don't blame him for the OL debacle, and without a functional OL, I don't know how Michigan could be expected to succeed.

I just think Michigan threw way too much at their freshman WR's and QB's (O'Korn included) than they could handle.  I don't think we put them in a position to succeed with so many intricate option routes.  I assume that is Pep's doing as the passing game coordinator.

I am hoping that with another year in the system and a potentially different QB, our offense will be able to handle more of what the coaches give them.  Or the coaches are able to cater the offense towards strenghts and simplify if need be.
