OT-Tigers trade Verlander to Astros at 11:59 pm deadline

Not sure how to link on mobile but according to Lynn Henning and Anthony French, Justin Verlander has indeed been traded to the Houston Astros.

For rebuilding, cost-saving, and talent-restocking purposes, but NOT because JV is past his prime.  He may be (at 34), but the guy has been lights-out since the All-Star break.

"Past his prime" would correctly describe all of our closers for the past 6-8 years (J-Willy and Greeney excluded).

EDIT: And dude is one year removed from finishing 2nd in the AL Cy Young voting, only because two idiot writers from Tampa didn't even have him on their ballots (which was inexcusable).

I realize this is necessary. Verlander gets to pitch for a competitive team. The Tigers need to shed salary and rebuild.

But I really, really, really hate this.

He's not just a ballplayer. He's JV. He's OUR ballplayer.

I'm not a cardiologist, I'm not wishing anything bad of V-Mart, and I'm not trivializing his health issues in favor a business decision, but he's been on the DL twice this year with heart issues.  There's a non-zerio chance he could hang it up, like Jiri Fischer.  I don't know what the ramifications of that decision would be (i.e., if the Tigers would still take a cap hit).  When Datsyuk retired, the Wings will had to trade away his cap hit.  I don't know if MLB works the same.

I am increasingly disinterested in pro sports. There is very little that's fair about them, when all is said and done. When teams like the Lakers can cheat because they know they can afford the fines. . .

And although I follow the logic in arguments by those who say we have to professionalize college sports, too, the ideal of amateur sport is pretty much over, has pretty been RUN over by a gold-plated Humvee. I don't like the guys in the yellow and plaid sports jackets.

As my mama used to say, "I'm glad I'm going!"

Not even detachment. I'm happy for Verlander. He's on a good team now, and he may finally get that WS ring.

Plus, the Tigers need to rebuild. It was a good run from 06-2014, but it's over. We came close twice. It's time to move on. Build another winner, and the fans will stay.

Whoa. Who could have known all this? Sorry, but this kind of hot take is annoying. If you are detached, you most likely have something better to do with your life than comment on a message board. The whole point is to be attached. If there is no emotion in it at all, why the fuck would anyone watch? It would just be a transactional occurrence with empty seats.

In fact, I would argue and have that there is more to be gained by watching a career of someone like JV or Miggy than there is in having one brief moment of glory in Oct/Nov of one year to get a championship that you yourself would say we should be detached from.

Unless you have some other connection to the game, your take makes absolutely no common sense whatsoever.

WD with the hot take hoping for upvotes.

I hate seeing JV go. I remember getting his autograph and speaking with him his rookie year when they played in Cleveland. I knew he had that some extra. He is the only Tigers jersey I bought.

While I am sad to see him leave I am excited for him to hopefully finish a career fighting for a title than being stuck on a team reabuilding.

Also good on Avila for getting some decent prospects when everyone said they would get nothing because of JV's salary.

Baseball is broken and has lost me entirely. I guess growing up in an era when guys like Trammel, Parrish, and Whitaker played all or most of their careers for one team ruined me for spin-the-bottle baseball.

This guy spent 13 years with the Tigers. He gave his all for us.  He waived his no-trade because the Tigers wanted (needed) to trade him.  If he didn't waive it, it would have been sentimental but detrimental to the Tigers.

Sucks that these 13 years have to end this way, and it's sad/crazy, but he's still spent most of his career with the Tigers and his departure is going to speed the rebuild that needs to happen.

Plenty of things to complain about re: baseball, but JV being traded after a loyal 13 years for the benefit of his team isn't one of them.
