OT: Rick Pitino Rumored to be Candidate for Detroit Mercy Job

Submitted by MGoBlue7523 on
The Detroit Mercy coaching search continues to wind all over the map...Would fit the "small, Catholic" school profile that Pitino is said to be looking for. However, UDM is an Adidas school so that would seem to create some conflicts.

Seems like a real odd couple match. Pitino obviously, and U of D has devolved over the last few years with some embarrassing off-court stuff (sex scandal with the AD I believe, and also Bacari was suspended in the middle of last season for some reason); plus their actual team has rarely even been good, and lately they have mostly sucked. Too bad because I always thought the Titans had potential--they are in one of the best basketball cities in America. I think that they just need the right young coach--somebody like Brad Stephens at Butler or the guy we just played at Loyola. Pitino at this point just looks desperate on both sides.

As erroneously reported by The Detroit News, University of Detroit Mercy has NOT contacted Rick Pitino about the University’s men’s head basketball position. The University will be reviewing candidates in the near future.

Needs to just go away. You got caught, you tried to fight back for some reason, just leave.

Enjoy your millions, stop talking, and go to Florida. Buy a giant yacht, and leave basketball alone.

I am not sure about the rumor being true, but if i'm UDM I definitely reach out to Pitino. Frankly, the only way they would be able to get a coach of Pitino's caliber is if they have flaws. Probably the only way to get their program noticed in town.

Sure your program will get noticed, but for all the wrong reasons. As a Catholic school, do you really want to bring in a proven repeat offender who hired prostitutes to lure recruits to Louisville, who cheated on his wife when he railed some waitress in the back hallway of some restaurant somewhere, and then paid for her to get an abortion?

Isn't abortion pretty much grounds for ex-communication in the Catholic Church? Good coach, sure. But he stands for quite literally everything your school (and by proxy, your church) should stand against.

Confess his sins and ask for forgiveness?   3 Hail Mary's and you may get to coach again?

If true, not a good look for a religious school (or any for that matter).

Yeah if I'm UDM I jump up and down to get Pitino. The guy will be on his best behavior there and probably get some pretty damn good recruits.

It would look super hypocritical though to fire Bacari for saying smd, among other things such as losing a lot of games, and hire Pitino given his whole situation.

I don't get that idea. He didn't stop cheating after the first time he got caught. He needs to win big to get considered for better jobs. Does anyone believe he'd rather fail honestly over winning dishonestly?

I think any school that hires a coach with Pitino's history is perfectly okay with him cheating for them.

If this is a real thing, the Detroit press should be railing against it.  Pitino goes aganst everything a good Catholic believes in.  Not to mention that he's a proven repeat offender - and don't give me any crap about him never being caught.  Shit follows him everywhere - the FBI has him cold, the entire world knows he ran a brothel for recruits in Louisville, and he continues to deny any knowledge of it, at all.

If that's what UDM wants representing them, then the Catholic church should excommunicate the school.  And I'm not even Catholic!
