How much of his recruiting success had to do with him taking over a loaded LSU squad in a talent rich state with no in-state competition and right next door to Texas and the rest of the loaded South?

I think he's a very good head coach, but he had a lot of built-in advantages at LSU.  He just had to be not-Gerry DiNardo.

Lots of coaches take over loaded squads, he still had to keep it going. They could have fallen off a cliff like Florida did once Urban left. Also LSU was pretty mediocre for 30 years until Saban came along, so those "built in advantages" weren't working for quite a few guys, more than DiNardo.

I'll give you the "talent-rich state with no in-state competition," because LSU is THE school in Louisiana. But I don't think you're giving him enough credit for out of state recruiting. When he came into LSU, if he wanted to go get guys from Texas, he was still competing with Mack Brown who was more or less at the height of his powers from 2005-2009. You had Meyer in Florida, Bowden at FSU, who even though his last teams weren't great he could still recruit with the best of them. You had Richt in Georgia, who brought in top-5 to top-10 classes every year. You had Saban in Alabama, who by 2009 had most of the Death Star already in place.

It's not like the rest of the South was in a tailspin when Miles came in and that he had his pick of the litter. The South may have been loaded but there were still a lot of schools to choose from for any top recruit. Had Miles been able to find a way to bring his offense into the 21st century he'd probably still be at LSU, and would likely have more than one national championship.

It's pretty bad when our masses will go off on something like this and find it cool while buying the hell out of it. It's a stupid little piece of plastic that spins. There's is nothing special about it. There's a message there and pick your poison. Robots or idiots.

This is how old people get duped into Nigerian phone scams. I could sell Les my entire warehouse full of fidget spinners at a profit. Has anyone shown Les the little rubber bands in funny shapes? I think the kids will love those.
