OT- Game of Thrones S05 E09: The Dance of Dragons

Submitted by Eastside Maize on

Arya is on her first mission. I have a feeling that a "Golem Mountain" will make an appearance this episode or next. Cersei would you like more water to lap up off the floor? We all know episode nines are insane and sometimes TV history. What's your fav episode 9 between "Ned's Dead', "Blackwater", "Red Wedding", "Wildlings @ Wall" and tonights? I'm going with "Ned's Dead' just for the simple fact that showed me anybody can get it.

Do you know why all the world hates a Lannister?

There wasn't one single error as big as arming the lunatic religious gang, maybe the closest was trying to have Tyrion killed during the Blackwater (or was that Joffrey, I can't remember?). I guess just a culmination of the way she couldn't control Joffrey (or Tommen for that matter), trusting Littlefinger, and other smaller mistakes. Both Tyrion and Tywin told her flat out that she wasn't anywhere close to as smart as she thinks she is.

Not sure how to embed, but here is the 'Inside the Episode' for last nights episode.

D&D mention flat out that the burning scene came straight from George. Either they are lying to cover their asses or that is a book spoiler. So book purists can't really complain about that anymore.
Although I will admit, burning Shireen seemed out of character for even Show!Stannis, but viewers have to remember this is the same guy that killed his brother and was going to burn an innocent teenager (Gendry).
It just sucks because I was starting to like Stannis this season :(

All good points.  It appears that this will happen in the books.  And I'm sure Stannis' evolution from "No burning, pray harder" to "bye-bye Shireen" will be more drawn out in the books.

It's almost damned if you do, damned if you don't for the TV show.  You spend the extended time on Stannis to make this evolution seem more natural and you've bored an audience for weeks.  You cut to the chase and you're commiting too abrubt of a change in character.

They probably could have found a better middle ground, but the more I think about it, the more it DOES fit Stannis' character.

He's going to lose.  He must.  He is not the leader that Davos wants him to be. He's always been flawed and Renly was right when he said, way back at the beginning, that people won't follow Stannis.  His desire to be the mesiah that Melisandre claims he is has always won out over more sound decisions.  He/Mel murdered his brother.  He's burned other family members (Selyse's brother, IIRC) at the stake.  He was going to burn Gendry.  He burned Mance.  It was all building up to this.

The more interesting questions follow:

1. What is Davos' reaction?  Does he finally give the bird to Stannis?  Maybe he takes a boat from the wall to White Harbor and we get that storyline in Season 6.  That would be awesome.

2. How would the north accept Stannis?  They wouldn't, right?  There's no way.  So, what happens if Stannis takes Winterfell?

3. What happens with Sansa if Stannis is successful?

I agree about Stannis not being the leader Davos wants him to be. I'm pretty sure he isn't who Mel thinks he is either. If he ends up consenting to Shireens burning in the books then it must be for something else, like the stone dragons or something. Him doing it to win the Battle of Winterfell would (logistically) make no sense.

1. I'm more curious if Davos knew what was going to happen. That's why he had such an emotional goodbye with Shireen. If he somehow finds out or knew about Stannis doing that, maybe Jon asks him to go search for Bran and Rickon and we end the season with Davos on his book storyline.

2. I think the only way the North accepts Stannis is if he names Sansa or Rikon warden of the North and continues on his war to Kings Landing. It's a possibility.

Really hate to say it, but this episode really killed the momentum from last weeks awesome 10/10 episode.  The whole Dorne story seems like complete and utter filler material, what a waste of a storyline.  Stannis' actions were really upsetting, the guy is a total tool.  Does he not realize the lord of light is basically the devil.  Child sacrifice and birthing smoke demons, i mean come on Stannis.  Arya's story might finally get interesting.  The whole Harpies scene was pretty silly, like the Harpies have been all season, but seeing Drogon and Dany riding off was cool.  Then again, what happens to Tyrion and the gang, they were kind of left there to fend for themselves.  Does Dany have greyscale now that Jorah touched her, or since Jorah's playbook wristband was on, will she not contract it.  Overall, it depends on what happen in the finale, but my initial impressions are very underwhelming for an episode 9.

Thank God Hannibal is back on, anyone else see that brilliant first episode last week?

The point of Dorne is that the Lannisters are consolidating power in the south to battle Stannis in the north, meanwhile that Targaryen gal is coming with dragons and the white walkers are amassing in the north. It's Tolkienesque five armies stuff*, except there will be 4 armies and Stannis will be squeezed in the middle.

*Unless the Iron Born re-enter the picture in season 6, thereby giving us five armies.

All well and good, but it still doesn't make the Dorne stuff interesting.  I am not a book reader of this series, so all I go by is the show, and the Dorne stuff has been filler material for me and just plain bad from a writing and acting standpoint.  If I was John, I would also be screaming at the top of my lungs about the battle that just took place, but he says nothing and now the rest of the night's watch look at him with disdain, not knowing what he had just gone through.  The Arya stuff has been a snooze all season, but has the potential to get interesting.   What happenned to the rest of Dany's crew too, she just up and left them.  Like I always say, this show is great in a lot of ways, but this season besides episode 8, has felt incredibly underwhelming, and a lot of the storylines have fallen a little flat for me.

Yeah, I agree with you, and they probably won't believe him, but if I was just in that type of battle, I would be stomping through the gates with Tormen screaming at the rafters about what just happened.  I just don't know about this season, There has been some really good stuff, and there has been some really lame stuff too.  The Son of the Harpies act like rejects from that terrible show the Following, where Joe Carrol's idiot followers just go around stabbing people for whatever reason.  The whole scene when The sons of Harpies emerged was super corny though.  I am probably alone, but I laughed my a** off at that scene.

I'll admit there were several episodes this season where I had a hard time staying awake. I'm not sure if that's a reflection on the show, or just that I was watching late at night when I should have been sleeping. However, the last two episodes have been incredible.

Gmoney I couldn't agree with you more, I had these exact same thoughts. I also don't read the books so only know go off of the show. Normally episode 9 is a "big" episode and this felt like a big letdown. Stannis has gone completely loony. And when Danny started flying away all I could think of was why the hell was she leaving behind Tyrion, Jorah, and everyone else that was protecting her? We are supposed to believe they just let them get away and live? Also on that topic, you're telling me all those harpy people were sitting in the stadium with their masks the whole time and nobody noticed? Cmon

Man, no suspension of belief?  I don't know, maybe the sons of the harpy were just sitting in the crowd without masks on and put them on and moved around at a pre-determined time. Seems like a weird thing to care about in a show about dragons and frozen zombies and shadow baby assassins.

It's not like Dany really knew what she was doing or what Drogon would do either.

As for leaving the others behind but surviving, I'd chalk it up to two things: it's a TV show and Drogon charred up the major majority of the harpys, so perhaps there's a negligible number of them remaining. Without the numbers and without their attempted assassination victim around, why risk death at the hands of skilled warriors like Jorah and Daario?

Exactly - you don't even need to suspend that much belief.  I doubt the Great Games has a security operation like the Superbowl.  Ummm the people basically all wear togas for clothes.  Is it that hard to hide a mask and some knives under garments like that?  The spears couldve been preplaced in any number of hiding places with a few inside guys. Not hard to believe given the level of insurgency and hatred for Dany.  I mean the stadium is basically an armory anyway.  The remaining Harpies peeled out - the target was the mother of dragons. She escaped.  Nothing is accomplished by killing a few more of her soldiers and officers. Live to fight another day and regroup.

There's been some casting announcements that indicate the Ironborn chapters will be explored next season. I doubt it will have the same scope but they can't keep acting like they dont exist.

That's why we have opinions. I loved the first Hannibal episode. It was definitely slow, but I really enjoyed the Eddie Izard stuff and the relationship weirdness between dr demurier and Hannibal. Between the cinematography, the dark humor, and the call backs to the Hannibal book, I really thought it set the mood for the whole season. This episode of GoT just had too much focus on shit that I could care less about, Dorne and Arya. This season in general has been lacking in a lot of what I really like about the show. I guess we will agree to disagree.
