NY Times editorial board chimes in on the Michigan State situation

Seeing Izzo on the sideline right now (hoops vs psu) and all these people cheering for them is disgusting. It's like none of the victims matter to these people. He needs to go. If you have any dignity... clean house.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:21 PM ^
The first part of your last sentence should tell you why the second part of your last sentence won't happen. But I agree. 15,000 sycophants rabidly cheering Tom Izzo is just so disgusting to see.
January 31st, 2018 at 9:13 PM ^
....no you have it all wrong, the victims matter to tom as evidenced by the team/fans wearing some teal. The color teal will help soothe the victims of the atrocities they suffered at the hands of that devil. Thanks for caring tom!!!

January 31st, 2018 at 9:21 PM ^
And they already stopped wearing the teal.
February 1st, 2018 at 9:21 AM ^
after all, he's had a hard week...
February 1st, 2018 at 10:53 AM ^
It wasn't that hard of a week. He said it himself in the post game presser....losing to Middle Tennessee was tougher. No wonder they don't want that idiot to talk.
January 31st, 2018 at 10:09 PM ^
I get what you are saying, but I doubt they are there to cheer on Izzo. I mean they can still support the team and how else do you expect them do that?
February 1st, 2018 at 3:16 AM ^
I guess you missed the "Izzo" chants from the other night.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:45 PM ^
I really hope MSU gets knocked out of the NCAA tourney early and their season is ended.
Oh wait, I say that every year.
But this time it is because they shouldn't be playing as if everything is fine on their campus because it is not. The 'game goes on' mentality is deeply disturbing. Due process gives them the opportunity to flaunt their fancy team's success but the lack of decency and corruption will be paid for in time.
January 31st, 2018 at 9:04 PM ^
MSU even makes PSU look less loathsome. At least PSU had a credible investigation and cleaned house to a much larger extent.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:16 PM ^
Nothing really earth-shattering, unless you're a 'head in the sand' Spartan fanboy.
Or maybe I've just seen so much coverage on this issue (don't get me wrong - it needs to be publicized) that I'm numb to it at a certain level.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:25 PM ^
It's a decent opinion piece, but honestly they are way behind the "times" with all that's out there. I would be interested to see what Snyder or the Legislature does, if anything. I suppose if the NYT makes a suggestion, career politicians (not that Snyder has plans after this) should listen or at least consider.
Actually Brian's frontpage this evening is probably the best rundown of how bad MSU athletics has been at discipline. The sad thing is that he was only really discussing all that to look internally. It would not surprise me to see some mainstream media pick up his article, to be honest.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:28 PM ^
Max Bullough's bar fight in Colorado was missed in Brian's piece.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:31 PM ^
I think Bullough was dismissed from the team for that fight so it doesn't count.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:48 PM ^
What was the story on Bullough and the Rose Bowl game when he was 'suspended'?
January 31st, 2018 at 9:06 PM ^
I don’t think they ever officially released a reason, but rumor was PEDs detected in a drug test.
January 31st, 2018 at 9:16 PM ^
MSU ‘roid wagon rides on....
January 31st, 2018 at 8:35 PM ^
The more widespread the coverage, the greater the pressure on Michigan State to take action.
February 1st, 2018 at 9:48 AM ^
of the most important arguments. It shows how overwhelming they are even on their face. And it makes clear the degree to which the ugly has finally penetrated the wider public/national consciousness.
At this stage this think looks, to me, miles bigger than the PSU story. That had a single perp, at less crazy scale, and a lot fewer--almost sadsack people covering the thing up. This is a whole institution digging wildly in the sand to bury many, many bones--even skeletons--while a huge crowd stands around staring at its ugly hind end. And even though it looks up and stares wildly around from time to time it still doesn't seem to have copped on to the fact that everyone's watching.
I would like to see a consortium of the media dig into the story together.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:30 PM ^
Seeing Izzo turn all purple faced screaming at his team like a midget Brian Kelly just disgusts me. Even if he wasn't an evil little man I don't know why anyone would want to play for him.
February 1st, 2018 at 10:15 AM ^
It's one of the reasons you have to chuckle when the lazy press professes to be shocked, yes shocked, that such a sweety is now under such suspicion. Whole lot of "investigative outlets" failed to perform their jobs for a decade and more.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:34 PM ^
They call for MSU to clean house but don’t actually call out Izzo and Mork by name.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:46 PM ^
Will dry up soon. So will ability to pay liers and scum that will do anything to win. The World is on this ... and the victims will never be silent. Sad year or two to come in Michigan ... State of obviously
January 31st, 2018 at 9:06 PM ^
But PSU has bounced back, and Baylor is on the rise.
January 31st, 2018 at 9:20 PM ^
The hell? Baylor is not on the rise lol.
January 31st, 2018 at 10:38 PM ^
they already hit bottom

247 composite recruiting rankings 1/31/18
Michigan 16
Baylor 24
The trash comes back quickly

“impartial” and “measured” as just about any voice in the discussion. They see the lunacy and incestuous behavior by the BoT and MSU loyalists.
In all seriousness, MSU will not escape or evade or resolve this stain on their reputation until they fully clean house. They have zero credibility and the outsiders see thru their shenanigans.
This will get worse until it gets better if it ever does.
January 31st, 2018 at 8:59 PM ^
NY Times isnt exactly credible any more...
January 31st, 2018 at 9:36 PM ^
it's no Breitbart, and it's certainly no Weekly World News. So you're right on with your hot take.
January 31st, 2018 at 10:18 PM ^
Breitbart is terrible - but so is the NYT. They routinely run political bias pieces as news, same as Breitbart, just playing for a different team.
January 31st, 2018 at 11:31 PM ^
Tom Brady is the same as Brian Lewerke, just playing for a different team.
February 1st, 2018 at 4:11 AM ^
If you really think NYT is on the same level as Brietbart, I hope you teach kids old enough to figure out what a dumbass you are. NYT is just the mouthpiece of the most entrenched interests in US economics and politics. Brietbart is for pimply dudes who think feminism is the reason women ignore them.
February 5th, 2018 at 8:28 PM ^
Wow. Saying the NYT is more the mouthpiece of US politics than Breitbart is, when Breitbart's CEO was literally the White House's chief strategist up until a few months ago - that is a whole 'nother level of stupid.
Are you an MSU administrator?
Hate leads to suffering, my friend. Don't let the dark side take you!
January 31st, 2018 at 9:45 PM ^
wtf is wrong with you?
January 31st, 2018 at 10:02 PM ^
It’s no infowars, I’ll give you that.

I'm waiting for Trump to finally do something about the slave colonies on mars
January 31st, 2018 at 10:19 PM ^
You got your own edition of Fake News Awards you’ll be handing out?
January 31st, 2018 at 8:59 PM ^
But the message in the NYT editorial could not be any clearer. I doubt, however, that anyone on the MSU BoT (or in the Governor’s Office, AG’s Office, the Legislature, etc.) reads the Times, let alone takes heed of its advice.
January 31st, 2018 at 9:01 PM ^
Both coaches looked the other way and allowed their student athletes run above the law. Baylor’s coach is vilified and fired. He can’t get another sniff at a coaching job. Dantonio on the other hand is idolized at MSU and will most likely retain his job. What am I missing?
February 1st, 2018 at 12:22 AM ^
A smoking gun. Find it and he will be gone as well. It's still all rumors, this and that.
February 5th, 2018 at 9:06 PM ^
Paula Levigne says additional people from MSU have come forward, and she is investigating. Maybe she will turn up the smoking gun......
February 1st, 2018 at 6:04 AM ^
They are 2nd tier schools trying real hard to be top tier schools. All of them are fine enough schools and athletic programs on the macro level, but they all got caught trying be at the tippy top by letting varying levels of bad things slide.
January 31st, 2018 at 9:06 PM ^
On one side of the gym you have Mike Valenti waving his green-and-white pom poms.
And on the other side of the gym is the rest of the world.
January 31st, 2018 at 9:52 PM ^
Is so weak. “ESPN claims are Dishonest and disgusting BUT if it turns out to be true I will be the first to burn it down.” Wow, what a strong stance all the while supporting the Spartan bluster. I expect to hear, “I’m paid to entertain”
when it all falls apart. Joel Ferguson’s pool boy he is.
January 31st, 2018 at 10:51 PM ^
“”The Spartan football coach, Mark Dantonio, wrote the foreword to Schuette’s book, “Big Lessons from a Small Town.” Occasionally Secchia is seen courtside chatting with the Spartan basketball coach, Tom Izzo, more often Dantonio — perfectly acceptable habits illustrating just how close some boosters are to the programs they support.”
February 1st, 2018 at 8:16 AM ^
One, totally agree that Brian's piece is the best summary, period. And by quite a margin.
Two, many people have said MSU needs to "clean house." Someone above pointed out that the funding and sponsorships will begin to fall and thus the ability to pay "liers and scum that will do anything to win."
The link is, one can't happen without the other. In other words State won't make the effort to make this right UNTIL the almighty $$$$ starts to go away.
