Mel Pearson appreciation thread

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

After going 13-19-3 last season during our worst season since the early Red era, Mel was hired and said during his intro presser that he was getting the keys to the old family car. And that car was gonna get repaired and would be headed to Saint Paul for the Frozen Four.

He delivered on his guarantee. We were 8-10-2 in January and near 30 in the Pairwise.

All of this without Will Lockwood as well. What a great job by the coaches and this team.

This was during the postgame presser as the players were done and Mel was about to come in for his presser. Hugging the seniors including captain Tony Calderone as pictured.

Michigan Hockey is back.

Absolutely amazing job. Just imagine what could have been but for that freak play in the outdoor game with Lockwood (and shad will be in the future). This is going to be fun, and in a hurry!

After hearing his press conference when he was hired, I was so happy because Michigan seemed to find the hockey program’s Beilein in him. I didn’t know I would be THIS right with that thought. He not only accomplished the goal of making Michigan Hockey EXCITING again, he made them ELITE again. Which is incredible. What an accomplishing season for a rebuild! Frozen Four in the first year? Insane! Since I hope for improvement, how about we win the big one next year? GO BLUE!! BEILEIN/PEARSON 2020

The team looked tired, trying to do it all with pretty much one line.  And it bit them in the end.

But at no time did they look like they were not well-organized and well-coached.

Add some depth and broader talent, and this program will be a machine.

What's M hockey summer look like?

we lose a handfull of SRs, probably Hughes but gain more draftable talent than we lost? don't bother with the younger hughes, that's a pipe dream imo.

I think it is likely that Marody leaves for the NHL. Edmonton gave up a 3rd round pick for him, they will push to sign him.

I think Hughes is 50-50 to return. While the skill is obvious, he does still need some work, and he needs to fill out. I guess it depends on who drafts him. Don't forget that he was the youngest player in college hockey this year. Similar to Werenski, I could see him back for one more season.

The only crappy thing about the game - aside from the loss - was the way ND plays.  That is a shitty-ass awful way to play hockey, played by teams that don't have enough talent to play 'real' hockey.  But otherwise, Michigan handled it well.  They got beat on a crappy play, the loss hurts, but the team is in really good hands!

The coaching at M is the best I've ever seen across the board.  Screw the losses, its a great time to be a fan of Michigan sports!

The way we lost was such a classic Michigan Hockey way for the season to end, so that sucks but its hard to dwell on it too much because this isnt the same Michigan Hockey we’ve been watching the last 5-7 years. The future is awfully bright for this program. Mel is recruiting awesome. He took this mediocre program and in one year built them up and got them to a frozen four. With the next 3 frozen fours all being somewhat near to Ann Arbor, we’ve probably got some great times ahead of us Just so tired of getting so close and faltering. Oh well. A frozen four in year 1 is far more than I ever hoped for. I really can’t complain other than I wish we would just lose by 3 or 4 goals for once instead of in devastating fashion every time

When he gets another offseason to improve the penalty kill. That and Jack Hughes might just make this team a scary-ass juggernaut.

PS: Screw DirecTVNow for crashing last night. I watched the first period, then I was forced to follow rest of the game on twitter and statcast-- which is just cruel.

Mel and his team had a great year, and there is going to be a lot more of this to come.  Horrible way to lose a chance at the NT, but that's how things go.  Hockey gods owe us one.
