Maryland Starting QB Tyrell "Piggy" Pigrome out for the year, DE Jesse Aniebonam out for months

Submitted by Bambi on

Link. Torn ACL for Piggy.

He's a sophomore who was pretty terrible last year when he played sparingly. After opening his season with a pick-six he looked pretty good against Texas, going 9-11 for 175 yards and 2 TDs along with 11 carries for 64 yards and a TD the rest of the way.

True freshman Kasim Hill (#233 overall and #10 Pro-style QB in the last recruiting cycle) will take over. He went 3-3 for 44 yards and had 5 rushes for 14 yards and a TD against Texas. If he's the pro-style QB the recruiting sites say he is, this will be a pretty significant change for Maryland as Piggy was supposed to be their Denard-lite.

Also out for "months" is starting DE Jesse Aniebonam. Link

Aniebonam was supposed to be one of Maryland's best defenders as he had 9 sacks and 14 TFL last year. He was projected as a mid-round pick this year. It seems like there's a chance he's back for Michigan's game in MD on November 11th, but regardless both of these are huge blows to Maryland's team this year.

Hill is definitely mobile. Their offensive philosophy won't change too much other than a little less of the play-action rollouts that were designed for Pigrome since he's very short for a QB.

Poor Maryland. They lost their one QB completely safe from Jewish and Muslim cannibals...

P.S. I heard talk Maryland was going to start Hill anyway this week, though I can't remember where. Maybe it was on BTN?

I feel bad for them, showing so much promise and dealing with two serious injuries like that. Hate seeing anyone get injured, plus I know it could be us so so easily.

It's good that they have a QB that has some talent to step in, but once teams get film on him (*cough* Don Brown *cough*) there's a good chance he'll struggle. Could be a rough year despite what appears to be an amazing level of improvement.

We know Texas might stink, but we also know how hard it is to go on the road and look good against ANYONE (remember the UConn game a few years ago?) and Maryland went to a really live environment and owned the place. Good for them.

Absolutely sucks for Maryland.  They showed a lot of heart in Austin.   I don't think they have the talent to regularly stick with the big boys, especially with these injuries, but it was a fun game to watch.    Maryland definitely has a pulse.

This doesn't just suck for Maryland, it sucks for college football. Piggy is an exciting player who would have made the Terps a very fun team to watch this season. Hope he can come all the way back from the injury.

Those injuries are definitely going to sting.

I could be off my rocker, but Maryland looks like - as Maryland goes - it is on the way up in the Big Ten. For much of that game, watching them roll over Texas on some series and take advantage of some less-than-stellar play on the part of the Longhorns made me think about how tough an out they might be.

Rough way to go for Pigrome (I watched that game against UT and was impressed by the degree of improvement in all three aspects of Maryland's play). However, their offense strongly depends on QB runs and I would not be surprised if Hill goes down later this season also (but hopefully not). They have no good options afterwards and would be in bad shape.

Anyone heard anything about the guy who was carted off the field in a stretcher? I believe his name is Antwaine Richardson. Surprised no one seems to be talking about him, his injury looked scary.

Did anyone see how badly Maryland players were slipping all over the field in those Under Armour cleats? That's also what caused Pigrome's injury. If I were Durkin I'd be livid.
