So obviously Harbaugh is the best hire, but have to agree with the OP that getting John Clayton on Michigan's staff is a close #2. He is such a respected journalist, and who thought we could pull him from ESPN? They mud be pissed, not seeing this on any of their channels or Twitter feed. I am guessing he is the Minister of Information or some other title that doesn't count against our nine coaches...just brilliant. Another guy with NFL experience on the staff. HARBAUGH!!!!!

This makes no sense...you can't argue record, national perception, super bowl appearances as a HC, anything.

Then you talk about Harbaugh going to college, where he's a legend. Then to his alma mater.

This makes ZERO sense.

But keep trolling.

5. Brian Schottenheimer, St. Louis Rams: A couple of years ago, many people predicted he'd be a head coach by now. Instead, he is heading to college to become the offensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs. Not sure that was the right move to help increase his odds at becoming an NFL head coach. - from the "Biggest Losers" section

The moment this particular hire was announced, college football Twitter snickered for a good hour, so it will be interesting to see how this goes for Georgia. I did not see a lot of Bulldog fans jumping for joy certainly.

I'd like to be pissed off too, but it's interesting that the secondary headline of Clayton's article is "Mailbag: Which teams came out on top of NFL's annual scramble for coaches?".

Given that he even mentioned Harbaugh's return home to Michigan in an article that focused on the "NFL's annual scramble for coaches", I can't really hate on this article too much.  Rex Ryan > Harbaugh?  Not so much.  But credit to Clayton for noticing the elephant in the room - especially given his dependency on the NFL.

need to move on. We got our guy, and it's about as good of an hire as we could've made. Who cares if an analyst thinks it's only the second best hire made in all of football.

Well, since Harbaugh is at least 5 times the coach Rex is, and a university landed him instead of an NFL team, I'd say us hiring him is the best coaching hire since San Fran pried him from Stanford.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

John Fox ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Yeah, great coach who quit on his last two teams in Carolina and Denver.  He epitomizes the problem with the NFL and is a great example of how Harbaugh to Michigan reflects on the shallow pool of actual coaching talent in the NFL.

I can't help but think people mainly like Rex Ryan because of his personality and demeanor. Is he really THAT great of a coach? I don't know his history all that well.

Even without my Michigan bias (which is quite strong) I would have to rate Harbaugh to M over Rex to Buffalo.

Michigan made the one hire that is a sure thing.  You couldn't do better if you were searching for water in the middle of Lake Superior.

Rex to Buffalo is very boom/bust.  Buffalo had an extremely good defense last year.  Rex is an extremely good defensive coach.  Buffalo has had problems on offense.  Rex has had problems on offense.  Buffalo has HUGE QB issues.  Rex has pretty much lived with that same problem his entire time with NYJ.  It would seem that they are getting a coach very familiar with their strengths and issues until you look at the actual defense.

Rex is a 34 coach.  Buffalo's D was a 43 last year.  As we all know, the schemes can be fudged a bit, but the 43 Buffalo ran is very different from Rex's 34.  The personnel on that D have run 34 previously, but not very well.  Mario Williams was the top pick in the draft and was very solid in a 43, then disappeared as a 34 OLB.  He gets into Scwartz's wide-9 and is suddenly quite good.  Think he's excited to be back in a 34?

It seems to me that Buffalo has put a lot into fixing the one part of their team that wasn't broken.  I wouldn't be shocked at all if the D takes a step or two back while Roman's O continues to disappoint.

Clayton was interviewed by Matt Dery on Detroit's 105.1 a couple of weeks before U of M hired Harbaugh. Dery asked him where Harbaugh would end up. Clayton mentioned 4 or 5 NFL teams, the usual suspects - Raiders, Jets, etc. Dery had to bring Michigan up and Clayton VERY dismissively said " Uh, no. No chance. He wants to stay in the NFL." Another clueless NFL guy.

I think he's a good coach but the Jets have been a consistant cluster in every postion above him. When Michael Vick is an option at QB and the Geno Smith you're screwed as a coach.

Who cares, geez. We have the best coach we could possibly ask for. It is funny because when Clayton was one of the only NFL guys reporting that Harbaugh to Michigan was a done deal, everybody was talking about how Clayton was one of the only NFL "insiders" that they liked. Now, after actually giving Michigan a pretty big compliment by including them in an article about NFL coaching changes, everybody hates the guy. Relax.

Clayton is a NFL guy.  I never saw him mention colleges other than regarding players.

So based on this, if we read between the lines, the Wolverines are about to enter the NFL.  Perhaps Adam Schefter will have the scoop on them moving to Los Angeles, thus keeping Harbaugh in California.

We just got listed as the #2 biggest offseason coaching change winner in what is essentially an NFL COLUMN.   The fact that Clayton even put us on what is an NFL list, let alone put us at #2, shows how big a deal the Harbaugh hire is.  So what that he put Buffalo ahead of us?  He could have just ignored us because "college doesn't matter to the NFL".

I saw this earlier today and thought is was actually pretty cool. Clayton is an NFL guy so I was actually amazed to see Michigan at number 2 since I assumed this was only an NFL list.

He doesn't really rank the winners. He just lists Buffalo, Michigan, Chicago, etc as winners. I think the numbering isn't really indicative of how good they won, because Chicago did much better than Buffalo, and Oakland might have as well. It's just the standard 5 winners / 5 losers list espn does at every possible opportunity.
