My wifes father gave me a bottle of Suntory Rare Old Whisky 'Royal' before he passed.

My wife says to drink it. Not doing any good on the shelf.

Not something you'd mix, right? If you know. thx

Reading up on whiskey last night, I came across the reason they are called rocks. Apparently way back when, the Irish wanted to cool off their whisky a little bit and they'd go down to the water and find a cold rock to pour whisky over to cool it a little bit.

Not sure if true, but makes sense to me.

in fact, so many scottish people add a splash of water to even the best scotch whiskeys that studies have been done to find out why it tastes more flavorful:

Gallegos reports that he noticed local drinkers added water to even the most rarified Scotches. (For those not in the know, Scotch is whiskey made in Scotland, primarily from malted barley. Scotts spell the drink whisky, without the ‘e.’)

Like a good scientist, he decided to investigate if this practice really did change the flavors of the local tipple and if so, how.

Here's the full article: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/science-says-add-little-water…

Basically, slight dilution releases flavor molecules from ehtanol clusters (which theoretically enhances flavor).

Adding ice acheives similar dilution but the cooling of the liquid more than offsets the effect. Ive heard.

I actually usually drink mine straight because I can't break habit, but scientists and Scots (who are kind of the authority on whiskey) say add a splash.

^ Thanks.  I was doing a little research and saw adding water helps the flavor as you said. Too strong numbs taste buds. I read distilled water. No minerals or nuetral taste.

I did not crack open the Suntory last night but an old bottle of Jack Daniels. Wife said she remembered it on her shelf when she was young. I poured it over ice, about half way through it was perfect. At the end, too watered down. So I'm going to experiment with adding cold water.

RE: "E"  I see my Suntory is Whisky and my Jack is Whiskey.

Grey Goose and tonic with a lime.

And I beat the ever living shit out of the lime with my stirrer.

Hopefully Michigan is the stirrer and Minnesota is the lime tomorrow.

Not sure what I'm going to drink when I get home, but I won't be finishing the rest of my 4-pack. One of the worst beers I have had. I'm giving the 3 I have left to a friend.

These posts make me think of him. He has not posted in 12 days since his exile to Bolivian. That's amazing restraint. Yost, if you are out there lurking, know that you are missed.
