Coach Harbaugh getting key to city of Toledo.

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on
Tonight Coach Harbaugh is being presented with a key to the city of Toledo. He is the main speaker for the Access to Justice Awards taking place in Toledo tonight. The key is being given to him from the mayor of Toledo. Good to see Harbaugh being involved with this and being presented with this. Also, I’m sure there are some Osu fans mad about this as they hate how many Michigan fans are in Toledo.

3-star key.

For $7M a year, we should be getting the key to a much better city than Toledo!

He'll lose the key to another coach by NSD.

Did I miss any?

It is probably 50-50. The Osu fans in Toledo are actually worse than a lot of other places in Ohio. The amount of trashy house directions is down right sad. Drive around neighborhoods of Toledo for a good laugh in this regard.

I always thought of Lucas County and really northwest Ohio in general as the "Neutral Zone" between the core of Michigan fandom and OSU fandom, kind of like how Washtenaw Avenue from US-23 to about Hewitt serves as the same thing between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, the exception being that I don't shake my head at Eastern Michigan flags like I do Ohio State flag. No, Eastern flags get a raised eyebrow saying, "Wow, someone actually did it."

Lived in Columbus for a a little over a year, but S/O was still up in MI so on the weekends I'd go up a lot. Once you get N of Findlay you start start seeing UM fans...

Also ironically High St (Columbus/OSU version of state street) runs/turns/ into/is US 23 - The hwy from Ann Arbor to Columbus (well besides when it turns into 75 etc...)

Those are the only 2 parts of the Buckeye State that are IN Ohio, but aren't really OF Ohio.  Both are definitely different vs. the rest of the state.

Toledo's 50-50 in terms of support for the Buckeyes, and Buckeye fans are arguably a minority faction in Cincinnati (Bearcat fans tend to fervently hate OSU).

It's a mix of Appalachia, Midwest and East Coast.  With a very slight (minimal) dose of Southern, Rust Belt and Bluegrass.

And it's noticeably different than 5 cities that are within a 100-mile drive:

(1) Louisville is a mix of Southern, Midwest and Bluegrass.

(2) Lexington is a mix of Bluegrass and Appalachia.

(3) Columbus is a mix of Midwest and Appalachia (and a little Rust Belt).

(4) Dayton is a mix of Rust Belt and Midwest.

(5) Indianapolis is pure Midwest.

w/ a little bit of Appalachia, and then I changed it.

You do have to get out to Muskingum or Perry or Ross County to get that Appalachia feel, and that's 45+ minutes out of Columbus.  Not really a true part of the Columbus Metro.

As opposed to Cincinnati, where Clermont County, the West Side and Kentucky are right there as part of the Metro.

In retrospect, I shouldn't have changed it - you're closer to the truth than I am in my post.

Columbus DEFINITELY has more of a bluegrass feel than Cleveland or Toledo.  I'm not sure if they still have it but when I lived in Columbus from 2000-2005 (worked at Nationwide) you could listen to a real good radio program on the NPR station 820 called Bluegrass Ramble that was really good.  There are definitely some pockets of Bluegrass in Columbus as you go an hour east and you are in Appalachia man.  Indy Town is pure Midwest I agree with that.

Columbus has a ton of Appalachian influence.   We used to joke that it was the northernmost city in West Virginia...

I agree about Cincy though except UC probably takes a backseat to UK.   UK has played basketball games in Cincy.  Lexington is only an hour south.

Detroit has a ton of Southern and Appalachian refugees. That's how my family got to Detroit. I sat next to a woman on a plane from Detroit heading South a few weeks back who had nearly the identical family history/moving story as mine down to the county in the South we originated from. It was wild.

When I lived in Dayton, we would go to Cincinnati all the time.  I really liked it there.  It did not have that run down utilitarian midwest agricultural / industrial feel that Dayton did.

It felt much more cosmopolitan than Dayton, and there were parts of it that really did feel like you were in the South or in the hilly parts of the East.

They actually did something with their riverfront area which was quite nice.  They lit up the buildings at night in neon.  I liked the Mt. Adams hills area, and I even found the "bad" Over The Rhine area around UC somewhat interesting.

It did not feel like people were just killing time until they died like Dayton did.

I love downtown Toledo.  Can watch a Hens game or a Walleye game, hit up a bar and drink a beer walking down the street (just passed open container law last year).  The Rib-Off is fun, too.  It's a lot better than when I was in my twenties, it's turned around a bit.  The outskirts is where it starts to get seedy and dingy.  It's either downtown Toledo or I go to one of the outlying cities; Perrysburg, Maumee, Sylvania.  I avoid the outer parts of Toledo like the plague.

As a resident of Perrysburg I agree with this. Downtown Toledo has developed awesomely over the last decade. The Walleye are a great organization and thanks to Al Avila’s focus on improving the minor leagues the Mud Hens are finally good again. I will say that the old west end is pretty cool, though I kinda consider it downtown as well. The Toledo area is a nice place to live. Also, the Buckeye fans still outnumber us, and I’m sure the recent history of both programs has a lot to do with that. I’m sure the fact that it’s much easier and cheaper to go to OSU as an Ohioan will always be a factor as well.

The other night, the Dems in a Congressional district in NE Ohio nominated Harbaugh for Congress, Ken Harbaugh that is. I’m assuming no relation to Jim et al.

I live in Toledo, you sir, are correct.  Actually if I exclude my family, I probably know more Michigan fans than OSU fans.  But, OSU fans make obnoxious friends.

I’m from Toledo. Noticed after the election that Mayor Kapszukiewicz has a Master’s Degree from U of M. Don’t know much about him so wasn’t sure how deep his fandom runs(if at all), but this is certainly a good sign!

My Son lived in Toledo for 7 years until about 2 years ago.

He gave Toledo thumbs down.  Gangs and drugs downtown.  Lack of night life.  Why did they have I-75 unfer construction for like 10 years???

The one good thing was housing was CHEAP!
