Brian Smith likely to be Michigan DB coach per Sam Webb

Submitted by UMCoconut on

Chip Viney & Aubrey Pleasant interviewed for U-M's vacant DB post, but hot name I'm hearing is former Philadelphia Eagles asst Brian Smith

Smith played for and then coached under Don Brown at UMASS.

Brian Smith most recently was an assistant LB coach for the Eagles, but he also previously was an assistant DB coach for the Jets. I believe that Michigan DC Don Brown was Brian Smith's DC when he was a player at UMass.

There's more information on the Scout board, but Sam seems to think that this is the guy barring something crazy happening.

And my endorsement means...absolutely nothing.  BTW, "Georgia Coach"....when Harbaugh tweets at you specifically and does not say your name, it means you are already dead to him.

I think I agree with you, but everything I read on Viney made me really hope to get him. I know the most qualified guy got the job, but it sounds like Viney has excellent potential as a coach and generally sounded like a Harbaugh type of guy. I'm sure Oklahoma is thrilled about this, and like I said, I know the most qualified guy in the end got the job and that's all that matters.

Work ethic lands Concord grad on Eagles' coaching staff

The next two seasons, Smith was one of the final cuts in training camp when he attempted to make the San Francisco 49ers. The team asked him to return the next season, but Smith decided to move on. He started working for a Wilmington accounting firm, with a lucrative salary, but realized that he wanted to get into coaching. So he went back to UMass and served as an assistant there from 2004-06. In 2004, he worked with the school's linebackers, and from 2005-06, he coached the wide receivers, including current New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz. Then Smith entered the NFL's minority internship program, and he ended up as the Jets quality control coach on offense in 2007. He kept working his way up the ladder until head coach Rex Ryan was fired last month. Then Kelly and the Eagles called. But Kosanovich said Smith isn't done progressing, and that he can be an NFL head coach one day. "No question," Kosanovich said. "I know he knows the game. I would tell anybody that if you want someone to be the face of your program, Brian Smith is the guy you want."

gets his Dude as long as he is a good dude and good for Michigan.  Like the NFL experience and connection with Coach Brown.  Completely trust Coach Harbaugh.
