Beaver: Hackett taking a run at Harbaugh through the 49ers

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

longtime user Paly33 posted this in the thread below this one.

Don't want to start a new thread for this but over on Scout board, (GBW writer Tom) Beaver claims that one of his sources has a friend close to SF situation that Hackett will be making a major move for JH "through the 49ers". It would be bigger than what we would've thought was possible.

So you haven't listened to Sam Webb and others say he has expressed "serious" interest over the last couple of weeks? Are we dumb not to think that Hackett has not spoken to his old coach Jack Harbaugh about Jim and probably John soon after he took the AD job???? We have like 3 weeks to get this shit done. Nobody can convince me the search process started today. Hackett has been working the Harbaugh angle himself. I will not be shocked if a huge announcement happens by the end of next week. Buckle up. The buy-out is a great move. San Fran would have the high probability of getting squat for any NFL trade for Jim and he could walk to Michigan and they are stuck. This way they get something for a coach that their management wants gone.

So far the best evidence any of us has is like 3rd hand information through our favorite Michigan rumor source. Rumors fly during times like this and a lot of them end up being bull. I'm not even thinking about buckling up without a lot more information...or any real information at all.

It actually might.

Imagine an agreement being negotiated where the 49ers allow Harbaugh to sign a contract with Michigan but stay on as coach for the rest of the season. In exchange Michigan agrees to pay the final year of Harbaugh's contract.

It's a win for the 49ers because it costs them nothing to get rid of Harbaugh and they no longer have to deal with the media circus being a distraction.  It's a win for Michigan because obviously.

Now I don't know if this is actually feasible, but it's at least interesting.  And with no real information it's fun to speculate.

Okay, but again, if Michigan and Harbaugh both want the deal done now, what's stopping them from just having him leave the 49ers?  And why would they 49ers agree to have him publicly sign a contract with Michigan right now, potentially jeopardizing their ability to get into the playoffs?

Bobby Petrino burned every single bridge he had in the NFL by doing that. Literally all of them. He will never work in the league again, even as a position coach or a scout.

Plus it's a dick move that a professional like Jim wouldn't make.
