It's a spring game, pal. Let's see how Peters does outside a controlled scrimmage.

Speight has the experience and has been in big time games. This is his job to lose. Peters will have his chance one day. Can't wait to see him and McCaffery duel against each other for the rights to lead this team to the promised land. Stupid amount of talent between those two.

Yes, it is a spring game.  Another data point to include with many others.  This small data point points towards Peters.  Speight had some fantastic games, and some extremely not-so-great at the worst possible times.

If Harbaugh truly will start the best, then we should probably guess Speight currently.  I disagree that Peters should be dismissed as a starter by fall.  It's more than possible.

I was at the game, so I couldn't quite visualize why everyone was going on about Marcus Ray sweating in the open thread yesterday, but yes, after seeing footage today, he is making Gary Williams look dry in some of those shots. That's what happens when you get a warm day in mid-April in Michigan - your body just isn't prepared and goes into that July panic mode early.

Caveats aside (Speight and Peters both completed 9 passes, Speight faced the best defense in the country, Peters faced the backups, etc) he did look more like a freshman playing injured in a hostile environment, instead of an experienced starter at home in a scrimmage.

  • After reading all the QB comments, I thought Speight would look worse.  Don't get me wrong--this did not look like a step forward for him, but he was under constant pressure and did not have lots of open receivers.  That said, Peters looked very good and it would be great to have an honest competition that encouraged both to play better.
  • Man, the RBs are impressive.  Evans looks bigger (though we didn't see much of his running); Isaac's vision appears to have improved; Walker has a tantalizing blend of power and quickness; and Higdon was the best of the bunch--decisive, quick, powerful...he could have an amazing season.
  • WR looks wide open.  Black, DPJ, Crawford, Johnson, McDoom, Ways...I have no idea.  This is less than ideal--would love to see a few guys prove they are better than the pack.
  • TE--plenty of receiving options and not many blocking options.  Excited to see Bunting back in the fold
  • OL has a long way to go, but I think we'll have similar results compared to last season.  Hoping Frey can work some magic.
  • The starting DL is as advertised.  Unfortunately, so is the depth.
  • Uche flashed some serious ability.  Glasgow looks like a Glasgow.  Hudson, Metellus, Kinnel--three very good, very athletic players.  Kemp looks like a back-up that can provide quality snaps.  Bush is going to win the starting job over Robo, and Robo is pretty good.

Overall, here were my top players (in order):

  1. Higdon
  2. Peters
  3. Gary

I don't think it is at all unreasonable to expect the established starter to not throw two interceptions in a spring scrimmage, especially a pick-6 in the red zone.

Turnovers are a big no-no with this staff, too.

Speight looked clumsy or awkward to me, like the game is still moving fast for him. Not at all what I expected or hoped for. I'm afraid that his ceiling is less than Rudockian.
