2015 OH OT Nolan Ulizio Offered
According to 247, Durkin offered 2015 OH OT Nolan Ulizio . He is listed at 6-6/280 and 247 has him as a 2 star.
I dont believe he's been on the radar before but the coaches must obviously like him. All the 247 crystal balls (FWIW) have him as a Michigan lock (he is currenly committed to Uconn ?)
Has anyone ever seen him play or heard anything about him ? This one is new to me.

I am bettng the staff sees 6-6, 340 after a year in the weight room.

340? I was thinking more like 7-4, 440 lbs. Our new strength and stretching coach is really good.
Kid is a 280 lb senior, probably has some bad weight before he can put on good weight. I for one am fine with the staff offering some lower rated guys, our staqff surely knows about a thousand times more about evaluating talent than anyone working for Rivals or Scout.

He's got one heck of a frame and a mean streak. He doesn't look heavy at all.
Not sure if he can bend well enough to be a tackle, but maybe a guard?

He does really push kids off the line and rides them to the ground, though. He gets downfield and blocks. I realize these are all highlights, but looks pretty good.
His low starritude may have something to do with him not hitting the camp circuit? Getting missed or overlooked by the sites?

The "if Michigan likes him he must be good" bump

He plays against good teams in Ohio fwiw (Huber Heights, Colerain, etc.).

A 2 star kid with no real major offers that was set to go to Uconn. Then he gets a call from Harbaugh today. That's got to be a good feeling.
January 18th, 2015 at 10:14 PM ^
If there's a single position I trust Drevno/Harbaugh with it's OL, even more so than QB.

Because Stanford was O-line U. Multiple unheralded recruits went there and turned into NFL draft picks.

Sorry to say, this offer confuses me. What if he takes harbaugh up and then a considerably higher rated commit decides he wants in?
Just don't know the logic behind it all.
January 18th, 2015 at 10:27 PM ^
My guess is that Harbuagh rates him high enough that he will be happy if he commits and really wants to play here, rather than wait on a hypothetical.

I take your point. And I am the first to say I don't know shit.
I would just like someone who knows more to try to explain the logic (though first responder did a bit).

Don't know if this is how it works, but here is how I'd think of it if I were a coach.
I'd grade out players where there is interest and if they have a certain grade, say 90 or higher, I'd offer them. As other players commit to other schools and NSD gets closer and closer I'd lower my threshold. If I get a kid with a verbal to Michigan at the same position, I'd raise my threshold for new offers, so I'd offer a kid with a 95 now, but not a 90, because at some point you take talent no matter who else is coming.
Maybe Nolan would never have gotten an offer if Harbaugh was here for the whole recruiting cycle, but this timeframe does change everything.

Never understand why people put more stock in the evaluations of others over those of the coaching staff.
Can the experience and expertise of talent evaluators at Scout, Rivals, ESPN, 24/7 trump that of even the average coaching staff of a major university?
I frankly don't give a damn whether or not ANY of those sites think a kid will play or star at the next level. I trust the coaches. Not to say they're infallible, but I still trust their judgment a LOT more.

I trust Harbaugh and Drevno's instincts. A few of the posters mentioned it looks like he has a mean streak and that's probably one of the most important traits in a lineman given their job. Plus he has great size with the ability to put on more good weight. They probably like the mean streak, ability to add weight, and figure they can teach him the fundamentals. Plus if they're offering, they probably have a pretty good feel for where they stand with some of the higher commits. Stanford's run game with Harbaugh was mulling so if they offered this kid they must see something they like.

This implies that Harbaugh (or any other coach) gives a flying fuck about recruit ratings.

Jack Conklin was unranked before going to MSU. He was 2nd team All B1G at OT this season as a redshirt sophomore. Rankings aren't everything.

You can just look at Michigan.
Glasgows, Henry, Frank Clark, Jake Ryan, etc.

2 dumb things:
1) Anyone else get the poo-pourri ad when they went to watch the video? ha.
2) His video makes me think of Fezzik. "I can't help it I am bigger and stronger then everyone else."

The kid looks good, wonder why he's been overlooked. Someone mentioned that he was being recruited at Youngstown, so the staff was already familiar with him. Hope he turns out to be a steal.
January 18th, 2015 at 10:31 PM ^
This kid must play in a low competition level division, right?
He was driving people 10-20 yards away from the ball, pancaking, and finishing blocks with bad intentions.
I trust the staff on this one but I'm no OL expert.

This kid plays to the whistle. I can see a nasty streak inside him, and he looks to be a player who would be willing to put the work in.

This is one of the better OL films I have seen regarding one of our offers. He is big, quick and plays to the whistile. Hope Nolan comes to AA.

This looks like a big guy that we can sign and get in the weight room and teach technique for a few years so that he is ready to play as a JR which is pretty much what we need at this time.
Since we have plenty of depth on the OL the next few years this is fine. I suspect we're interested in him because Harbaugh has determined we need more OL in this class and there aren't 4* studs we can poach.
I suspect he is a 2* because his technique and balance aren't very good. I'm not an expert, but if he had good technique and balance, someone his size would not be a 2*. The scouting services are better than that.
I will be interested to see confirmation this is a scholarship offer and not a preferred walk-on offer. I could see the interest here and with the Texas QB being as preferred walk-ons, but I wouldn't really be surprised either way. If he commits tomorrow, we can probably assume it's a full scholarship offer.
