#11 Michigan Hockey at #18 Union open thread

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Big time game tonight. One of two teams in this horrid non-conference slate that will positively impact our RPI if we can beat them (the other one being BU).

Michigan travels to Schenectady, NY to take on #18 Union.

Union already has one impressive win this season, as they beat BU 5-3 in their season opener.

Racine starting in net tonight.

Scoreless after 1. Michigan took a tripping penalty late in the period but had an all-out kill that gave them some momentum headed into the locker room.

Their goalie, George Thomas, is their rock, But their best player is  the C Grant. He is an aggressive and dogged forechecker. He's always putting pressure on the opposition. No let up.

Sherman, their 2nd line C, just lays waste to the opposition's defense. When he's on the ice it's a march to the net.

The Union attack struggled at times last year with McClellan, Hooker, and Burnsides starting. But since Lincoln replaced then with the aforementioned and Sheridan, Union has really gone on a tear.

Michigan better bring it's best.

Not just these few games, I've never been impressed by Downing. He pinches too often in bad situations and has no speed to cover up those mistakes. Noticed him trying to make the big pass last year too often instead of just hitting the open short guy or gaining red line and dumping. He'd attempt to set up a break but turn the puck over which often led to a scoring chance at the other end.

2-on-zero shorthanded goal allowed. Just how undisciplined can we play seems to be a game inside the game.

I've said this before, but ~10 years ago someone from my HS went to Union to play hockey.  They were trash.  IIRC they had never won a series in the ECAC tournament.  In the history of time.  Whoever turned this program around maybe should be on our list if we can't get Mel back when Red retires (hopefully this year).
