Cut
This is Tarence Farmer. He is no longer part of Alabama's team:
Redshirt freshman wide receiver/defensive back Tarence Farmer has left Alabama's football team and is not expected back for the 2008 season, sources tell the Press-Register.
Farmer currently is at his family's home in Houston, Texas. He declined comment when reached today through a family member.
Asked by phone if Farmer had decided to transfer from Alabama, she replied, "Now that he would have to answer, but he doesn't want to speak right now."
Sad.
. . . is attributable to the fact that stating explicitly what you clearly inferred was implied, Daniel, would have been an instance of cognitive dissonance after Brian recently (and rightly) criticized a columnist for jumping to conclusions based on too few facts.
That, at least, is how I see it.
It is not an instance of cognitive dissonance when the 2 ideas are not diametrically opposed (I can use big words too OMG). On one hand, Rosenberg isn't jumping to conclusions based on too few facts, he's blantantly ignoring what is actually happening to write a shitty article. This is just a pure lie:
"This whole thing could have, and should have, been settled long ago. But RichRod was determined to fight West Virginia all the way to the bitter end. Anybody who has even driven past a law school knew he had no case, but that didn't matter to Rodriguez. "
Michigan has top 5 law school. Bill Martin is a savvy businessman. RichRod had an agreement with Michigan to pay $1.5M of the buyout. RichRod was not determined to fight WVU all the way, UM was make a calculated effort that spending $200k on lawyers could result in reducing the buyout by more than $200k. This is what rational people do. They evaluate costs and benefits.
As to the other half, saying Brian is jumping to conclusions on the bama player, I point to Occam's Razor to explain it. Also the quote: "Asked by phone if Farmer had decided to transfer from Alabama, she replied, "Now that he would have to answer, but he doesn't want to speak right now."" is pretty fucking clear in its answer. Of course I can't be 100% sure, but fuck, I can't be 100% sure that the sun's going to rise tomorrow and I'll be alive, can I?
but i maintain he was not cut. he read the you're not going to get playing time and is TRANSFERRING. yeah, you can say that its forcing a kid out, but there is NO indication that he was cut. Everything I've seen printed says he is leaving the team. He's not happy about it, but I wouldn't be happy if the coach I committed to playing for (Major Applewhite) leaves and with him any chance I have of playing.
Are you telling me that if David Cone would have left the team before last season to transfer somewhere else, it was because he was cut? I don't think so.
How much of a difference is there in being cut versus a player being told (as a freshman!!!!) he wasn't going to get any playing time (ever???). I figure that coaches that want a player off the rolls could tell a player no PT with the implication that if the player stays, his life will, quite literally, be a living hell. A complete pariah on the team. As a freshman (!!!), this kid, if told no PT, was not given a fair chance over the next few years to develop into a player that could contribute. Add in the fact he had nothing to say about the situation and announce his decision to transfer to ____ (probably has not had time to make the arrangements with another school yet).
Saban probably couldn't justify the use of yet another medical redshirt on him, and he still needs a few places on his roster. Simplest explanation - he was effectively cut.
Or maybe the guys at rolltideroll got it right that this kid is prone to make rash decisions, like the one he made committing to Alabama, before ever visiting the campus. I am not quite sure what their point is, though. Does that mean he made another rash decision to pick up and leave, without making a comment regarding his decision? Or that he got what he deserved for making such a stupid, rash decision in the first place without first knowing what his situation at Alabama would completely entail?
Two more "surprise" player developments to go at Alabama. Should we ask the guys over at rolltideroll to hold a poll/lottery to see who the next "medical redshirt", acedemically inelegible", or suddenly "unhappy" or "homesick" kid is. What will be the reason given. I am on the edge of my seat.
I am going to be the first to predict who (sort of) will be the next "ex-Alabama" play.
Now I am going to go way, way out on a limb here and predict that the next ex-player is, shockingly, not going to be a projected starter, or even a young 5 star recruit, but it is going to be someone way, way down on the depth chart. Anyone want to give me odds?
Just sayin'
