OT: Ben Mason is the starting FB for the chargers

Submitted by WestQuad on May 1st, 2024 at 10:27 AM

Saw some blather that Harbaugh isn't emphasizing WR on the Chargers so I looked up their depth chart and Ben Mason is the starting FB.

 How bout that?

This is seven minutes of murder face, but I start it on the Minnesota TD.

"I've never seen anybody go forward and hit somebody better. I think this guy was just made to be a fullback. That would be a great way to be described. That’s grit. Going forward and hitting somebody better than anybody I’ve ever seen. I’d like to be described that way. You could put that on somebody’s gravestone."

Gawd...I need a smoke after them highlights. I don't know about the rest of you but I have 4 teams to watch and cheer for in the NFL now. Seattle, LA Chargers, Minnesota and the Lions especially. Also Baltimore peripherally. This tangled web he weaves is enthralling.

The Lions are it but the others for the obvious reasons. Almost like I am following FF but with a true fan interest.

Eh, whoever put that together is a fake Ben Mason fan, maybe even a fake football fan.  You don't make a fullback highlight reel entirely out of carries.  That's as uninformed as putting together a pocket QB's highlight reel of sneaks.

Ol' Murderface was a fine short-yardage and changeup back, but he didn't earn his nickname carrying the rock.  His job was to go find the free hitter and give him the pain.  It's thankless, dirty work, and he excelled at it.

Listed as their only FB and was signed around April 2.

Interesting. He has been on various practice squads since being drafted and played in the Raven's final game of 2023 season.

Anybody know if being on the practice squad counts towards an NFL pension?

Thanks.

And good for Harbaugh for doing this.

Harbaugh gonna mess around and win a superbowl with no wide receivers, isn't he? Just extra linemen, a million tight ends, and Bench Mason clearing a path for the backs.

With limited roster space, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for teams to have a fullback on the roster. Stick an extra OL or a bigger TE back there on short yardage situations if you’re so inclined, but having a player whose only role is to block in short yardage situations or the rare FB dive is a waste of a spot on a 53 man roster. Especially as injuries start to mount in a 17 game season (plus playoffs if you make it). Ben Mason isn’t much of a receiving threat so it’s somewhat surprising he’s lasted so long even on the periphery of rosters.

Big annoyance is labeling stuff like this OT. Ben Mason is a Michigan Man. So is Harbaugh, Ben Herbert and Minter. If a former Michigan fullback plays for arguably the greatest living Wolverine, that seems very on topic.
