Additional comments from Doyel about Clark to her new coach in same press conference - it gets creepier
Doyel, who was already under fire for a creepy interaction with Clark while asking the No. 1 pick of the Indiana Fever a question, referred to her as "that" and "it" in a new video that surfaced while he was talking to Fever coach Christie Sides.
The link includes a brief video and you can hear the tone of his voice and the emphasis.
I know a second post to bring attention to this guy may bother some, but I think it’s worth holding him accountable. The more this nonsense gets exposed, the more likely it is that appropriate consequences can be taken.

Gregg Doyel is a shit
April 19th, 2024 at 12:15 PM ^
He came out with an "apology" article (that I refuse to link here because why give him clicks) and it was full of the biggest horseshit I've ever read. His whole excuse was that he wasn't being creepy because he says the same thing to male athletes. The only lesson he says he learned was that he can't speak to female athletes the same way he speaks to male athletes.
Bullshit for a number of reasons. 1. He absolutely doesn't speak to men like this. 2. It would still be creepy and unprofessional if he did speak to men like this, it just wouldn't get as much blowback/coverage because Clark is THE superstar right now. 3. It just reeks of whiny boomer BS complaining about "cAnCeL CuLtUrE." He thinks that ultimately he didn't say anything wrong, it's just the culture that turned his words and quirkiness into something he didn't mean.

Doyel has already written an apology. It seems sincere to me. No need to crucify the guy.
Considering how much he is going out of his way to badmouth Michigan through the years, I am not inclined to cut him a break.
He also wrote:
Jim Harbaugh's not the only one who can thump a Bible. He compares himself to Moses? Fine. I'm quoting Ecclesiastes.
A national title for Harbaugh's cheating Michigan program would render college football meaningless.
As well as:
The NCAA and Big Ten are on record: Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh cheated, and it gave UM an unfair advantage on the field. Given that, what do we do with UM quarterback JJ McCarthy’s Heisman candidacy? I’m saying his candidacy should be over. And I’m a Heisman voter.
And:
College football has been disfigured beyond recognition by NIL and the transfer portal, but a title for Jim Harbaugh's cheating Michigan program would be the kill shot.
It'd be a shame if Doyel's career was crushed by snowballing public outrage. I'm sure the most painful part for him is that he can't jump in and throw gas on the fire in this situation because, well, he's the one in the fire this time.
Sounds like he's a Sparty grad.
That guy has a Heisman vote? That's scary! He needs to give it to Brian...
Fuck him. Hammer this cunt.

Almost every woman I know gets super pissed when they hear that word, no matter how it's used. But I understand that other parts of the country and generations may not feel the same.
Meh. He wasn't calling a woman that, he was calling Gregg that. Well wait...
April 19th, 2024 at 11:07 AM ^
I'm on record myself believing that college football is on the downturn.
If it has to die, I can think of no better parting shot than a Michigan national title that causes rivals and people like Doyel crippling sadness in perpetuity.
Naw fuck that guy. Dude is an asshole. He's probably adept at giving apologies because he's used to giving them.
I don't think Doyel needs to be nailed to a cross but it wouldn't be shocking if he's no longer allowed access to Caitlin Clark (under the assumption he made her feel uncomfortable.)
He should be metaphorically nailed to a cross in that his career as a media personality should be over due to the weight of public shame and opprobrium.
Should he be literally nailed to a cross? Probably not worth it, given the price of lumber these days.
April 19th, 2024 at 11:56 AM ^
Not a cross, but a stake! With a garlic garland.
He's going to be covering her for at least a few years as the Indy Star sports writer. I hope she just refuses to acknowledge him whenever he asks questions at a presser.
April 19th, 2024 at 10:08 AM ^
I don't know about that. Guy should probably go after all this. There's no room for this misogynistic patronizing crap anymore.
April 19th, 2024 at 11:30 AM ^
I stated in the previous thread I think he needs to go, but I just don't see it happening.
He shouldn'tbe allowed access to anyone. He's an embarrassment to good reporters. Needs to be fired.
There is nothing sincere about that apology. It is typical "I'm the real victim" BS
Yeaup; ain't no fucking way he's giving heart hands to any male athlete, or telling them "Start doing it to me and we'll get along just fine"
Anger: This is how I talk to everyone! Had that been the male equivalent arriving to energize team and town – since I’ve been here, the closest thing Indianapolis has had is Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson – I’d have shown him the heart gesture and reiterated, “I like that you’re here.”
April 19th, 2024 at 11:33 AM ^
Nowhere in that ‘apology’ did he even acknowledge that comment. I might believe he’d make the gesture and say he’s glad he’s here to Richardson if Richardson famously made that gesture after games. But no way he says the final line to Richardson. I think he realizes that, which is why he doesn’t mention the line at all. Renders the entire apology insincere and besides the point.
I didn't see his notice of resignation in the article..
He made that entire "apology" about him and his "quirks" or whatever and how he's just an aw shucks silly guy. Hardly sincere, IMO.
Also, he's had lots of very bad opinions over the years and has written a lot of really stupid stuff. Him getting called out should've happened a long time ago.
April 19th, 2024 at 10:01 AM ^
It frustrates me when we say that a mediocrity like Doyel is wildly talented and should know better! Exclamation mark! No, he's a bum, an old-fashioned fake crusader-style hack journo who just slobbered on a woman who is helping to make women and her sport taken seriously. Publicly. Made her presser about him and made his apology about him; that apology is me, me, me, me, Caitlin Clark, what about me, etcetera. Doesn't even end with a convincing or heartfelt statement.
It was like, "Look at me, the celebrated journalist for men's sports, DEIGNING to descend and see what the little ladies are up to! Let me take them all down a few pegs, establish my little flirty pecking order for future availability with the gal here. She ain't one of those. . . LESBOS, is she?"
I don't see that this is a burning offense, but it's a shunning offense. It's a "Stop it, fuckwad" offense for a boss, and it should help move the guy toward the reject pile when it comes to how he's regarded nationally. Forever.
April 19th, 2024 at 10:47 AM ^
Not sure if you literally can’t read, or if it’s just that you can’t read between the lines, but you should maybe think a little bit before posting in the future. There’s nothing sincere about that apology and you should feel bad for not understanding that
April 19th, 2024 at 10:50 AM ^
No way...that comment was completely ridiculous and he showed his TRUE colors there. We can hate on him for his Michigan takes during the most ridiculous scandal in NCAA sports, he is a sports writer and they aim for clicks , but this.... well that's who he is.
Like WTF was that comment, creepy , degrading, misogynistic, all the words that describe pieces of shit men like him.
Clark says that hand gesture is for her family, and he says that?! His apology means nothing
April 19th, 2024 at 11:07 AM ^
The "apology" was all about him. Some people are just never going to get it
April 19th, 2024 at 11:16 AM ^
A lot of people think of apologies as magic spells and will consider them genuine as long as they aren't dripping with sarcasm (and oftentimes, even if they are).
April 19th, 2024 at 11:15 AM ^
He was absolutely deflecting and looking for hits. All he had to do was write that he was trying to be funny, but realizes now that it was inappropriate and demeaning to Ms. Clark and he apologizes and will do better going forward.
That's it. Whatever that was somehow made things worse, imo.
April 19th, 2024 at 12:18 AM ^
Successfully identifying himself as the problem is only a first step. The paper should take him off of this beat and send him to a year of training on how to be a person who does not abuse or harass women at a minimum. Firing someone for one moment of bad judgement seems extreme, but being a girl dad and having watched Moxie, I'm in favor of it. We don't need to look away or minimize this type of behavior, we should try to eliminate it.
Alright, I hate Doyel as much as the next guy, but this is getting blown way out of proportion. He made a few awkward comments at a press conference in an attempt to be playful. It was stupid and cringeworthy, but he made a genuine apology. Time to move on.
I respectfully disagree with you on this and I think it's essential we consider the source.
A journalist should know more than anyone how powerful words are. They are tools that need to be used correctly. This isn't a socially awkward surgeon or an engineer who didn't use person-first language in the joke she just told. I think nailing him down on this is completely appropriate. Especially since, as a rookie, it would be easy for him to think he has the upper hand with her right now (which he doesn't in any universe, but the dude clearly has an ego).
Second, I don't think he should go to jail, or have to surrender his laminated Long John Silver's kids menu that doubles as his Journalism U degree. He might just have to find a new place to work.
He sexually harassed Caitlin Clark at her introductory press conference. And he felt so comfortable doing it he did it in public. So what's he doing behind closed doors?
Needs to be suspended at the very least.
In no way does Doyel's conduct meet the criteria for sexual harassment.
He flirted with her and made her feel uncomfortable at her first team press conference where he was supposed to be doing his job as a journalist. He should be covering/reporting information about her, not hitting on her.
April 19th, 2024 at 11:05 AM ^
His conduct was inappropriate, shameful, and embarrassing. It wasn't sexual harassment.
April 19th, 2024 at 11:10 AM ^
Unwanted flirting/advances in the workplace is sexual harassment. Not sure why you are going to bat for this douche canoe, but you do you, I guess.
Maybe he's the guy we see in all those workplace training videos...
Yes
But also he’s a giant douche so Im enjoying him being on the receiving end of it for once
but he made a genuine apology
Unless you think apologies are just be excuses by another name, I'd hardly call that genuine or sincere.
Think of it as getting Al Capone on tax evasion. Doyel's Michigan comments are more egregious but if this is what F's him up then let justice be served.
April 19th, 2024 at 10:49 AM ^
‘Genuine’ - fucking LOL
I really don’t know what to say, he will lose his job and rightfully so. What a completely odd and creepy I’m going to follow you to your hotel ass mfer.
How does making posts on MGoBlog hold this person accountable, exactly?
Pitchforks! Torches!
If you're lucky, you'll understand someday.

Too lazy to figure out how to embed images in the new MGoBlog world ...
Mgoblog asked Elon Musk for advice on how to clean up the look of the site. Links are cleaner looking than images.
I'm not a cancel culture guy but he's just a bad journalist and a self serving d-bag and should not have access to the power of the press.
