OT: Video Games, what are you playing?
Hey everyone,
I've been an avid gamer pretty much my entire life. Received my first NES at 7 and nearly 40 years later I'm still going strong.
I've had a lot of time as I patiently await surgery. So let's talk games
I just fished Final Fantasy 7 rebirth which was an absolute masterpiece. The OG FF7 is probably my favorite game ever and they're nailing the remake.
I picked up as psvr2 about 6 months ago and have played a ton of Gran Turismo 7. It's pretty neat putting that headset on and racing around at 165mph.
I finally picked up No Man's Sky the other day just because I'm looking for something else in VR. I have Resident Evil 4 but it's not doing it for me.
Also recently downloaded the next Gen fallout 4. Hoping I can sink a few hours into that.
What are you playing?
Fortnite. I’ve got 3 boys. It’s like crack for little boys.
I’m in my 30s and play with my 30 and 40 year old friends and sometimes the kids. It’s fun as hell. Great game
My oldest loves Fortnight. I am horrible at it, but love all the characters he can be. Was super happy to see him get the TMNT package. In general, I realize I am horrible at video games. I do play rocket league with my oldest too. He does most of the work, but I have my moments.
When I have time I love playing Skyrim. Just a great universe.
I'm not a gamer, haven't really played anything in about 15 or so years when my old Playstation kicked the bucket. My kids play Fortnite on their handheld Nintendo Switches but they're saving up their money for a new gaming system. What's the preference nowadays between Playstation or XBox?
Depends a lot on what your kids are into. Fortnite is on literally everything at this point and I think has cross-play so they'll be able to all play with their friends.
Playstation is much stronger recently with their first party games, has exclusives like Spiderman 1 or 2, Final Fantasy 7 remake, and others. Generally better quality first party games get released on the playstation.
Xbox has recently had a lot of drama around cancelling games in the works and closing Studios that they recently acquired. They have less exclusive games being released at this point. But they have gamepass which is a great value provides access to tons of games for a monthly subscription including EA games. They usually have the last cycle of Madden/NHL/Fifa/F1/Pga tour come out a couple months before the next version releases. like Madden 24 was added a couple months ago, NHL 24 is on there now. Playstation has a similar playstation plus with various tiers that give access to a large backlog, though it lacks consistent access to EA games.
My kids have Xbox, because they prefer the controllers to Playstation. Know that Fortnite requires every player to have their own account, so although Fortnite allows “squads” of up to 4 players on a team, all of those players must have their own account.
So many times we end up with two kids playing on the XBox split screen, and the other has to play on the Nintendo Switch. I don’t know if PlayStation works differently. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
Banjo Kazooie
Manor Lords on the PC
NHL PA ‘95 on the Sega Genesis. Still holds up after all these years
NHL 93 is best. 94 brought in the one timer but everything else about 93 imo is better. The bloodied injured players after a body check or fight was also removed.
Looney toons sports for sega is also a great game. Has basketball and soccer along with other mini games.
Street fighter II while we are on Sega is also an all time great
The one-timer is what takes the game to the next level IMO. After having that feature, I couldn’t go back.
I never played 93, but did learn the one-timer in 94 despite being a casual player. It was pretty sweet. Not a huge hockey guy but Jeremy Roenick was great in that game.
+1 for 1994. I played Winnipeg, Detroit and Buffalo the most. Somewhere in my basement is a Genesis Nomad and that game. I need to clean the basement.
Bill Walsh College Football 93 was pretty awesome as well.
I still play NHLPA93. Became addicted at UM instead of going to Tax Accounting class. I think I’m still winning that decision.
Same, I was always more partial to 93
Haven’t played Genesis in years. But I trade for Shanny on ‘97. Champions
It is because of this game I had such a hard time ever accepting Chelios was a redwing and not a black hawk. Also where I became a fan of Paul Coffey.
EA Sports NCAA Football 2014. Mostly that. I also like City Skylines and may get the new version after my semester is over. I recently bought a PC tank game that simulates WWII battles that I can't remember the name of and haven't played yet. Waiting till the semester finally ends. It's highly rated, so I'm looking forward to it.
Im so bad at building cities but I try so fucking hard.
I built a city that stabilized at a population of about 160,000 but I can no longer acquire more land tiles. I was really counting on further expansion. I was hoping there was a mod for that, but I couldn't find a reliable one. I think the new one actually allows for larger land areas.
Helldivers 2 and 7 Days to Die
This is the most democratic answer.
World of Tanks, and MLB the show
Are you me? Although my son prefers War Thunder over WoT.
In my youth I pulled a massive number of all-nighters playing various versions of Civilization. Loved that game. I think I still have Civ 2 around somewhere.
FIFA, PUBG, and Rocket League if I'm playing multi-player.
Recently completed Avatar and AC Mirage. Restarted Fallout: New Vegas and that's what I'm working on beating now.
My habit the last few years has been FIFA, and one other rotating game. Do you Ultimate Team?
I stay away from Ulimate Team on all EA games. IMO its what ruined their games because it's all they focus on now.
SSL on RL?
Just a lowly diamond player here.
Gray Zone Warfare and various alpha/beta tests. Finally burnt out on Hunt Showdown (for the 4th or 5th time over the years)... Really just waiting (still) for Arc Raiders since the alpha last June. That new Dune game has potential.
Sold my PSVR2 after buying it (and the PS5) primarily for the new Firewall game and it flopping.
QWOP
Pong....
Hopefully on an Atari. The classics.
This was 1976 on a portable black and white TV 🤣
Dragons Dogma 2
I just couldn't get into DD2. After 700 hours of BG3, I just couldn't really adjust to the way this game is different (and it's very different). Honestly, turn-based combat is just so much better in this type of game.
It admittedly starts slow when you are fighting low level goblins etc. About 50 hours in and the game opens up and you are fighting big dragons and ogre bosses. It's the closest thing I've experienced to a D&D party in a video game.
Sort of a mix between monster hunter and elden ring.
I dock it points because it's supposed to be an open world but i feel boxed in and funneled to areas. The combat is action locked so that takes some getting used to.
If you like this type of high fantasy genre I'd definitely recommend trying to plow through the beginning because the end game is amazing.
If I still had it I'd be playing Super Punch-Out on SNES.
Oh that damn Hoy Quarlow... I'm still not convinced it's legal to bring a big-ass staff into a boxing ring.
I'm not cut out for multiplayer,* so I stick to single player games. I just finished Cyberpunk 2077 and have just picked up Spider-Man 2.
*I'll admit that the Helldivers 2 hype has challenged my normal multiplayer antipathy.
I don't play any multiplayer games because some 14 year old is playing that game 80 hours a week and I'm lucky if I play 5 hours a week. So I'd just be dying constantly and have some teenager talking shit to me.
I don't game a ton any more, but I'm about 200 hours into the Space Exploration mod of Factorio. Pick it up every so often and just go into it for a day. I'll finish it up one day.
CoD. It basically sucks now but I’m too stubborn to try anything else and I have friends on it at least 🤷♂️
Logged in to say same. I’m 47, and have been playing with my brother since MW2. We live several hours away, so it’s how we’ve hung out for many years.
As soon as I get to the end of this one, I'll try something more advanced.
Gotham Knights, Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 1, Suicide Squad.
In true MGoBlog fashion I just fired up a new game of Europa Universalis. I realized that after 1700 hours I haven’t played a Denmark game yet, so there goes my weekend.
Blades of Steel
Blades of Steel for Nintendo and NHL 94 for Genesis are the greatest hockey games of all time.
I'm bouncing between Kingdom Come Deliverance and Fallout 4 (because of the show, lol.) Highly recommend KCD for any super nerds like myself. It's a realistic and difficult medieval sim, it's right up my alley.
When I was younger, playing a lot of video games was the domain of No Sex Ever. Hopefully, that aspect of the gamer's life has gotten better with time.
