Multiple new 3-pack of Michigan anti-Covid masks now available

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on April 29th, 2020 at 5:28 PM

Was only a matter of time before we got the Michigan-branded masks.

They're a pre-order anticipated to ship on June 1. BUT, I bought the plain Maize and Blue masks a month ago and they said May 1 on their ship date but we received them a few days ago.

$25 from Foco and Valiant

They also have these if these are more your style.

$12.95

What kind of person brings such a bad attitude and negative energy during a time of crisis? We get things aren't going very well in your life right now but you can choose to be less hostile.

There is no such thing as an "anti-covid" mask.  However you stand on the issue of covering your face, let's please understand that these things aren't magic, won't prevent infection by the wearer (they're not even intended to do that), and are no replacement for sanitary behavior (wash your hands).

Wearing a mask is a great way to slow pathogens down.  If they're inbound, they're slowed and then deposit themselves in the wearer's mouth and thus accomplish nothing; or, they collect on the mask, which is then taken home, touched, and the infection is spread.  If they're outbound, they're slowed and may not reach as far as they otherwise would -- or, fewer copies of the virus might do so, anyway.

This is why surgeons wear masks -- to protect their immunocompromised patients, not themselves. It is also why you see stories about health care workers getting this disease despite the precautions they're taking.

There is an argument to be made for the "masks protect everybody except for the wearer" point of view.  I don't personally think the benefit is worth the societal cost of going around hiding our faces all the time, but it's at least a discussion that can be had.  Based on my observations, though, people who wear masks seem to think that they're protecting themselves.  And it leads to disregarding the other, more useful advice: stay away from infected people to the extent possible, and wash your hands frequently.

It's not an all-or-nothing dichotomy.  The fact that a mask is not 100% effective at stopping transmission does not imply that it is 0%.  Washing your hands isn't 100% effective either.  Staying 6 feet apart isn't 100% effective.  The only thing that is 100% effective is staying home all day, isolated from everyone else, and we can't do that forever.

If we're going to go back into the world and interact, we have to find ways to chip away at the virus's R0.  Masks are one way of doing that.  By retaining some of the droplets you expel, it reduces the amount that gets through to the air, and that does make some difference.

Barring an emergency, businesses that are afraid of my custom do not deserve it and will not have it.  Attending a Michigan game does not constitute an emergency, so, if you're right, I'll stay home this year.  (My city has a mask ordinance for the time being, so I've had to switch to shopping online entirely).

BTW, I wish everyone would please stop using the phrase "'til a vaccine."  Medicine does not work like that.  It is entirely possible that no vaccine will ever be developed, and our plans should allow for that possibility.

Is the 5G being potentially related to people getting sick really JUST conspiracy theory?

I think,    this needs to start being talked about.

I know you are lost and so behind the times.

But that's ok.  We will be here for you waiting.

Trust me when I say,  I have a VERY specific and legitimate reason why I'm raising this potential issue.  It's too early to know anything for sure,   but I do have a reason why I'm bringing this up.

Hint

Not just because I read something online.

Here, allow me to start the conversation on your behalf.

"Hi.  I don't understand the first thing about medicine, virology, technology, causation, coincidence, or conspiracies.  I'm guilty of spreading ridiculous theories under the guise of 'discussion,' even though I'm incapable of understanding the things that I'm saying.  I read what others write on the internet, no matter how unhinged, and I regurgitate it without further thought.  My ignorance is a net negative to society, as even if I choose not to act upon my deranged misinformation, other people may be more prone to overt idiocy.  I need help."

If you're lucky, maybe somebody will take pity on you and help you avoid making a fool out of yourself in the future.

What narrative?! I think you have me confused with somebody else.

5G mobile networks do not cause viral infection.  Unless you think that they're busy putting up 5G towers in places like rural Albany, Georgia, or on cruise ships in the middle of the ocean.

You're confusing temporal correlation with causation.  The fact that something happens at, or around, the same time does not mean that one caused the other.
