Transfer portal target at Safety per Sam Webb

Jaden Mangham S, Michigan State
Surprised by this, even with the injury to Rod Moore. Seems like we had good experienced depth there and some young talent coming on. Perhaps this signals one of the safeties moving to nickel and wanting to add more depth?
IIRC If Zeke Berry stays at NB, and Paige/Moore/Johnson leave our safety room is just Hillman and Oden. We need more bodies.
Not every portal addition is about addressing immediate needs. We’re losing Paige, Moore and Johnson after this season, which leaves Oden, Berry and Hillman going into next season plus any recruits, not to mention the possibility of a transfer exit and Berry winning the nickel job.
If you can bring in an experienced guy to rotate with a few years eligibility left and then step into a major role next year, that’s ideal. Similar to pulling in Hausmann last year even though we returned Barrett and Colson at linebacker
We haven't really recruited safeties and corners very well. After this year, we'll have like 3 guys to play safety along with whatever freshmen we get.
I think this more to get experienced depth than anything.
We’ve recruited them fine, it’s been getting them to stay that’s been an issue
EXACTLY. We've recruited them so well that we have Bama picking up our 2nd teamers.
Can’t remember if Michigan pursued him out of high school. Seems like he has a brother too. Maybe they pursued him.
Based on the TKA Roundtable it sounded like Michigan didn't offer him or at least didn't heavily pursue him.
He was offered and in the mix, but this was the class where they took Damani Dent, Sabb, Zeke Berry, and Kody Jones who were all safety-ish objects and he was more of an athlete with upside that they weren't sure if he was a WR or a DB, so he didn't make the cut.
Not that it matters at this point, but he had a pretty impressive offer list:
https://247sports.com/recruitment/jaden-mangham-121054/recruitinterests/
and Brian hates him because he has the stink of Mel Tucker on him
That was just Brian irrationally hating a Spartan and he admitted as much. I would take Mangum in a heartbeat if the staff decided he was worth an offer.
Who cares if he played under Tuggar for a year or two?!?
Lucky for him that Tuck’s stink is the only thing he got on him. Probably a lot of other “substances” flying around that football building, could have been much worse.
I agree with Brian here. And taking sparties could set a bad precedent
Next thing you know we'll be taking OSU's former RB coach!
Nah that's different. M and OSU share a deep respect in the rivalry. Sparty does not.
OSU respects Michigan? MSU taints football players? No and no. If the coaches want this guy, make it so. You win with people.
I was thinking of his brother, Jaren.
Actually are good kids, both of them. Ran into Jaren last year at a sushi restaurant. Very respectful and nice. From the Detroit area if I recall. I would definitely take him.
Gattis recruited him as a WR I believe
Did Gattis "recruit" his Mom? If so, we might be in trouble.
Just because you can think of a joke to tell doesn't mean anyone will think it's funny
@Seth, Mangham is another Groves kid
Considering Seth sang the fight song as soon as he was mentioned on the Roundtable I think he's aware.
Lol I didn’t get to listen yet
We lucky they ass
mangham? i hardly know 'im!
For anyone coming from MSU at this point we need to pull out the tunnel Zapruder film and identify them
You do know that nothing happened in the tunnel and the evil empire (us) used AI to frame those young kids.
Somewhere in Ann Arbor... Brian Cook is screaming into a pillow.
I mean, he basically did that on the roundtable when they talked about this.
From Lil' Brother? 2 of his credits wil transfer
I counter Brian's take in that we need at least 1 talented Sparty defensive transfer each season on the roster so we can DL the dirty shit that's being plotted behind closed doors. And to stand over them talking smack after a huge hit on national TV.
Omg they would lose their shit.
He is their best DB.
Their portal losses have been brutal which is curious so many coming out of Spring ball.
I mean there is no way a single credit from MSU would transfer, so this pick up is unlikely
I know y'all are being haters but point of fact: Michigan State credits transfer better than literally any other school. They get a lot of MSU transfers, and there's a lot of reciprocity between the school systems to convert each others' programs to credits at one or the other
Well...you know...pity...the downtrodden and all. Like community outreach, very charitable.
Within the state of Michigan, the community colleges, four year colleges, and universities (both public and private) participate in the Michigan Transfer Agreement. Cooperation among ~70 schools has created a very transparent transfer equivalence of general education credits. Both UM and MSU are full participants.
Speaking from personal experience, it's a great program. My daughter knew exactly what classes at community college would transfer where (so did the counseling staff). UM was one of several schools to offer mentoring resources to interested students. Best of all, her transfer path will be to UM in the fall!
I went to a CC and then transferred in. Great way to get a discount UM degree. And you get the same diploma and treatment from employers.
Although I'm glad I graduated in 2016 before all the covid and inflation bullshit made college insanely more expensive. Have her stay at the co-ops if she needs cheap housing. Truth house has tons of parking.
All of these posts need thumbs up because WCB and Romeo are taking every chance to rip on Staee, which is appropriate, and Seth is right in the real world, not the irrational rivalry world.
Is it safe?
Well, this is one guy we won't have to warn to watch his back in the tunnel.
My only worry would be that most of these State guys went there for money, so now they’re leaving for money. We love to rotate our safeties so if someone offered him more NIL and a clearer starting job, he could just leave next year.
Would he really come here to be a depth piece? I’m guessing he’s at least being told he’s coming in with an opportunity for regular playing time.

Some of you weren't reading my 2020 and 2021 recruiting posts and it shows. This was a "Sad Josh" recruitment. As Sam reiterated on the radio today, Michigan was coming in soft for Mangham as a WR/DB athlete, and Mel Tucker's staff started working hard when they came online. Meanwhile Michigan was prioritizing Zeke Berry, found Damani Dent outta nowhere, and were all in on Keon Sabb. They also were fighting MSU for Dillon Tatum, but could afford to lose that battle given the other guys they got.
Now that safety class is at Bama, Charlotte, and nickel, and Rod Moore is out for the year. I guess I'm the official MSU non-hater around here now but I find it ideal--whatever school Mangham went to--if Michigan can just go to the next guy they wanted and steal a starter off a rival.
As for whether there's room, ah yup. Add Sabb and Q-Jo's snaps together from last year and that's the role that's available. Brandyn Hillman came in super-raw but he might be pushing for snaps by the end of the year. The only guy after him is true freshman Oden, who's a better player than people realize but also a true freshman. I'd add Mangham to that group in a heartbeat.
I'd also use the next heartbeat to lament the broken bits from going into the offseason with Rod Moore, Makari Paige, and Keon Sabb as our rotation. That Moore injury may be the suckiest injury at Michigan since...Aidan Hutchinson in 2020? T-Wolf in 2010?
2020 was a fake season, so mos def Woolfolk.
The 2008-2010 seasons were pretty much fake seasons, too.
Michigan is going to have to take 2-4 safeties between the portal and recruiting next year.
Wouldn't say it's worse than Blake Corum's injury in 2022. We probably don't beat Georgia in the final, but can't see us losing that TCU game if we have Corum. Likely cost Corum a trip to the Heisman ceremony as well.
John O'Korn and Wilton Speight from 2016 say 'Hi!'.
